I’m A Loser Baby, so Why don’t You Film Me!

The big news of the week was delivered by Ann on Monday morning. She said that our good friend Allen Smith had been featured on the front page of the Columbus newspaper The Republic yesterday. It stated that he had been selected to be on the NBC TV reality show “The Biggest Loser!” I can remember him talking about applying about a year ago while our families were out to eat last summer. We are very excited for him!! I texted him and he called me back from Hollywood where he was preparing to go into wardrobe.  How cool is that? We can’t wait to catch him on TV this fall! Luke had a ballgame that night…and what a game it was! He hit his first homerun of the year, sending one way out into the grass! He was 1-2 at the plate, although if you ask me (it might just be me being his dad), he was safe on his second hit also…but the other team’s coach said he was out. I didn’t argue too much, but let him know that I disagreed. Luke was cool with it, as he sprinted back to the dugout still beaming from ear to ear from his homerun the previous inning.  Afterward, he was treated to ice cream for hitting it to the grass. However we were out really late, as his game didn’t start until after 8 pm (his bedtime) so we rushed right home afterward to head to begin our bedtime routine.

On Tuesday, we were all geared up to attend Abby’s softball game when we noticed a glitch in the schedule. The date said the 12th, but the day said Wednesday. So we called and sure enough, it was the next night…meaning we had the night off! So, Ann cooked supper and I took the kids out and played catch for an hour in the front yard and then came in and relaxed before watching American Idol…Abby brought home her first batch of dance pictures. These are from her award-winning tap routine, “Too Cool.” In addition, Ann got several pictures from one of the other moms of Abby and her hiphop class after their ShowStopper performance.

On Wednesday, the rains came…and it didn’t stop raining much all the way through till Saturday! Ann calls me at work and says there’s a damn duck in our pool. Of course, I’m telling her to shoot the thing and she’s like no, I want to take pictures! It eventually few away when she was photographing it thankfully. But between the duck and the birds pooping on the side of the pool and the rabbits under the shed and the birds in the fence I truly feel like I’m hosting Wild Kingdom. …I spoke to Allen for the final time before they confiscate his phone and they are sequestered at the ranch. Matt had said it would be cool if Allen could say hi to him on national TV. Al said he wasn’t sure if he could do any “shout-outs” but that he was doing a blink to say hi to his wife/daughter and that he would throw up a peace sign to say hi to Matt!  Matt was cool with it. Both Matt & Abby had games cancelled that night due to the heavy rains, so we enjoyed a rare second night in a row off! We were shocked and pissed that Danny got voted off Idol! I was up early on Thursday to get in to work by 6 for our Omelet Day. My friend / boss Dennis and I served omelets to all the staff as a part of national Hospital Week / Nurses Week. I also won 2 trivia contests and brought home some cool prizes. That afternoon, I left early to get to Abby’s Girls on The Run awards ceremony at the elementary school where she won the “Energizer Bunny” award…because she (or her mouth?) was always going! 🙂 Immediately afterward, I dropped off Bu with Grandma & Gigi and picked up Matt and headed out to the ball diamonds for Luke’s pictures for baseball. We had a game right afterward and Matt stuck around to help with batting through use of our hit stick with all the little kids. Luke went two for two with a pair of doubles. In the field, he started at pitcher but moved to first base again. Matt worked with him 1:1 on the aspects of playing over there and it paid off as he made several nice plays at both positions. As we were playing ball, Grandma ran Bu to dance practice and Ann picked her up before joining at the ball diamonds. After Lukey’s game, we stuck around to watch Matt play also. He was 0-1 with a walk and a K. Defensively, he saw no action in right or left field. They lost 8-4 and their overall record dropped to 2-3.

On Friday, I was so sick I stayed home with a nasty combo of respiratory / sinus infection so that I could feel better by Saturday’s 5K run with my little girl. That night, Bu had a softball game. She played left field and was extremely board, as she didn’t get one ball hit her way. Instead, she practiced her dance moves!  At the plate, she again looked lackadaisical as she struck out in her first plate appearance when I noticed that she wasn’t using her bat. This bat was heavier and longer than hers. Her coach Don and I convinced her that she needed to use her own bat that she was used to using. Sure enough, she hit a triple her next time up as her team came from behind to win 9-5 in the last inning! She tried to stretch it to a homerun, but had to go back to third and nearly got tagged out! BTW, they’re 2-0! Afterward, we took the kids to Pizza King as the thunderstorms began again and didn’t let up until the next morning.

On Saturday morning, it looked like we weren’t gonna get the race in as it was still storming. However, as it got closer to race time, the skies lightened up and as we arrived at Liberty Park in neighboring Batesville for the Girls on The Run 5K it was down to just a fine mist. Ann volunteered to help with registration (with Luke playing the role of her little helper) as Matt, Abby & I took off at 9 am. Matt & Abby shot off right away to the front as I lagged behind. About a half mile up the road, I passed them walking. Matt joined me as Abby began whining that her head hurt and she couldn’t breathe. I stopped but Matt went on with the front of the pack. Abby and I alternated walking and jogging. She needed a lot of encouragement to keep going. She complained about a pebble in her shoe then her ankle began hurting, followed by a sore throat and of course too tired to continue. I dragged her along for another quarter mile or so before I got tired of hearing her cry and decided to just walk along with her. She finally caught her second wind once we got inside a mile left and she ran for about half of the final leg, kicking it in at the very end and finishing strong. She received a nice bag of goodies, a medal, and she even won a door prize of movie tickets after the run! All told, there were over 200 girls entered, along with their buddies; so it was a great turnout. Although it was really wet with standing water, it stayed mostly dry during the entire event, with occasional drizzle. Matt finished at about 35 minutes, where as Bu & I finished at 45 minutes. Not bad for her first marathon…although we all know we could’ve done better. We are very proud of her competing; although immediately afterward, she informed me that she never wanted to do that again! We’ll see if her opinion changes in a few months.  We no sooner got home that I was off again to mow across town and Ann / Bu were off to dress rehearsals for Sunday’s dance revue and didn’t get home until after 4. Needless to say, we were all beat and we didn’t do much the rest of the night except veg, drink a couple Mich Ultras and watch the NASCAR all-star race on Speed TV. …and although I think it is cool that a local boy (Tony Stewart of Columbus) won the race (I’ll enjoy hearing him on the Buzz McKay morning show on Y-106 on Monday morning), only three words can sum up my feelings about the outcome of the race, “Kyle Bush sucks.” Oh; also, Rob sent me some cool fishing pictures! I can’t wait to call him ’cause I know there’s a great story behind these…

Finally, the big day arrived as Sunday was the day that all of the practice and competitions were culminating in to the Dixon Dance Revue at the high school, where Bu had three dances to perform. Ann had her out there shortly after lunch to get the finishing touches on her hair, outfit and routine beforehand. Abby participated in an all-star type of dance to open the show. They pulled together a bunch of the girls who only practiced five times. They looked great! This revue also saw the final performances of both the “Too Cool” and “Rock N Roll All Nite” (dubbed Rock-Pop Girls for today’s show) which earned awards this year! In addition, Gracie performed to S-M-I-L-E. Both gals did really well for their ages. Abby’s good friend Baili earned honorable mention Little Miss Personality! Abby was thrilled to bring home a ribbon and 2 trophies. She also received two flowers from Grandma & Luke, as well as a Dixon Dance Revue bear from Ann. We got home in time for dinner and enjoyed the season finales of both The Simpsons and Family Guy. 🙂 I hope the video will finally show up on this blog, but if it is not below, here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exwvIk9ocWE
