Crazy…but that’s How it Goes

This week has just been absolutely nutty. From the crazy weather that has shown everything possible to work for both Ann & I to the kids ending the 3rd nine weeks in a flurry – it’s been a roller coaster ride from you know where… Let’s start with the weather. It has dropped 60 degrees this week!! We started off hitting the low 80s on Monday evening, ran into severe weather with tornado warnings and heavy thunderstorms in mid week and ended in the low 20s on Sunday morning, putting a cap on three straight days of snow…no wonder we’re all sniffling and sneezing – Mom, I know you miss this crazy weather! As for work; I had a fight between two employees in one of my departments that ended with a total shake-up in that department. Ann had to deal with a weeks’ worth of drama caused by one employee that nearly ended the same way mine did. Matt had his usual cardiac moment at the end of the grading period which kept things interesting… Monday was the hottest day of the year so far and the first full day of Spring, stretching up to 82º, locally. Keith sent Ann a cute text mail with a picture out his back door which had a foot of snow on a bush and had the simple phrase, “Happy Spring…wish you were here.” Spring Break was over and after a couple of weeks of being off, it was Matt’s first day back to school since his emergency surgery. Abby went to her jazz/hip hop class for the first time in a couple weeks. She had to show Ann & I her steps in the living room later that night. The kids and I played outside for a few hours, riding bikes, walking, playing catch in the front yard – even Matt’s friend, Blake, from the neighborhood came down for a while. It was Matt’s actual 15th birthday. To celebrate, we had a small party where Ann made with his favorite dinner (chicken fettuccini alfredo) and we had birthday pie. She chose to forgo her night out with the girls at Bunco to spend it with her first born son on his birthday – what a good momma. Unfortunately, her dinner was so good that we all ate too much and no one wanted dessert! He still made a birthday wish and blew out his candles as well as received a few presents and a rousing rendition of the birthday song…

On Tuesday, we enjoyed another lovely day. However, at work it was ugly. I can’t go in to it here, but it was very disappointing to say the least. I came home and tried to make a tough decision. I exercised with the kids and again played ball with them in the front. I worked on Phyllis & Dick’s laptop and got it back in peak condition. We finally had some of that delicious birthday pie…except for Luke, who had to have more cake due to it being contaminated. Luke gave Ann & I some lovely painted rocks he made last week at Brandy’s house. Ann soothed my nerves with some Sailor Jerry.
On Wednesday, Matt was released to full contact. His quick recovery was a true blessing – thank you to all of those who sent best wishes to him. During the day, the temp fell 20 degrees as we had the tornado sirens sounding for close to an hour in Columbus and Greensburg. We saw heavy winds, hail, rain, lightning and thunder during the day and even snow overnight. In fact, we work up to light snow falling on Thursday. It snowed on and off all day long. Abby went to tap class and finally received her outfit. The girls practiced performing the routine in outfit. I thought she looked pretty cute. Matt went to weightlifting after school for the first time in nearly 3 weeks and was pretty worn out when he got home that night. Even though it dropped another 20 degrees that day, Luke & I braved the snow and went outside to exercise. Matt had Blake over to hang out and watch a movie, play football in the front yard and then to help him study, as he had taken his algebra test again in math class that day and had failed again – this time by a mere 5 points. Ann also helped him – first with motivation only a pissed-off mother can provide (she felt bad, but I thought it was exactly what he needed to light a spark under his butt). He was pretty discouraged and had all but accepted that he would have to repeat the 3rd 9 weeks and take the 4th during summer school instead of getting a job. However, both Ann & I told him not to give up, that as long as there was one more day, it was still a chance – and he had to take it. So Ann emailed the teacher and I took him in to school a little early on Friday. I received an email from the teacher on my phone that she would help him out and then I received a text from Matt that he had taken the classes and passed, as well as a follow-up email from the teacher confirming his status as having passed algebra for the 3rd nine weeks and will be allowed to move on to the 4th nine weeks with his classmates!! We just hope that he has finally learned a lesson about studying… I tell you, that kid is like a big cat – always landing on his feet somehow. Anyhow, we are proud that he eventually got his act together…although we can’t keep doing this stuff at the end of each grading period!! Ann had beer Friday that afternoon but due to her personnel issues, didn’t get to spend much time at the Garage Pub. Again, although it was cold and snowy, Luke & Bu both braved the weather to join me…at least for part of the time…while I exercised, trying to get back in to shape for the summer. I was also given some funny artwork from Luke & Abby (thanks guys!). I also discovered several great new photos of Katie, Reese and their family.

On Saturday, Ann went scrapbooking for several hours while Luke & Abby went to Christy’s house for the afternoon (Bu went to see Megan and Luke went to see Alex). Megan ended up coming to our house and spending the night. We had Pizza King pizza and tried to keep warm, as it fell another 20 degrees over the weekend – it was bitter cold, man. Butler won a couple exciting games this week and are headed to the Final Four!! I scanned roughly a thousand more pictures for our Waybac feature and will be putting them up this spring and summer. These aren’t quite as diverse as our last batch. These focus mainly on the late 80s to early 2K’s, but should still be a lot of fun. I stayed up late scanning and then got up and finished on Sunday morning. March Madness is in full bloom as not only Butler is headed to the Final 4 in Houston, but so is VCU – their next opponent – who is a # 11 seed. There are no 1 seeds still dancing at this point, which has made this one of the most exciting tourneys in recent history. It was again frigid outside, but that didn’t stop Abby, Luke & Megan from putting on coats, hats & gloves and going outside to play for a few hours today, although both little ones needed some extra parenting today that saw them both spending the late afternoon in their respective bedrooms to chill out a little. I got a hold of both of their DSI games and copied over all their audio and video files. I have included the best pictures in this week’s blog as well as compiled a short slide show with Abby’s audio files (below in the video section). I’ll have Luke’s media files in next week’s blog. I can’t wait until you hear the one audio file…

Here are this week’s videos (again, not much in this section for this week):

This is where I spent the majority of my weekend. I scanned over a thousand new pictures in and here is the first round. We lead off with a group of pictures from 1987: October birthdays in LaPorte with Nathan & Belinda; Nathan with his Halloween mask in Kokomo; Rob playing Pop Warner football (looks like they’re out on the Kesling field). Next we have several pictures of Robby’s First Communion in LaPorte with Aunt Dorothy and Dad sleeping (???). And finally, we have a batch from Christmas Day in 1990 at our house in LP:

Next we have several from our Florida vacation at the Sand Pebble in Treasure Island back in May of ’99, including Mom & Dad and their good friend George and then Christmas Eve later that year at our Main St home in Greensburg – including Bu’s first Christmas. Next we move to 2000 and stop first in March or Matt’s birthday – including classic pictures of Brayton, Amy & Baili, Beth and Maddie, Mom & Dad S and Dad B & Bu; then in June where we catch up with Matt at a T-ball game at the Y and Bu up and walking in the dining room on Main St.

Where’s Melonville???????? I wanted to order my “Stairways To Heaven” record of over 30 artists renditions of this great song!!!! What a hoot!!!!!! Loved that one~~

  • Hi guys; thanks for the comments. Yeah; I’m glad to see martin get a head coaching job. Week 19 will be sneaking up on us quickly! Yeah; that Zeparella has a bunch of videos up on the net, but I was drawn to this one. Good band, but especially the lovely guitarist!! Mom, I think Melonville is in Canada, as Second City (and their SCTV) was based out of the Great White North! SNL & SCTV were great in the 70s… I thought the Old Fart card was good from Bu and once she started making it, Luke had to make his as well. We weren’t allowed to get “normal” cards – LOL! The pictures and the video I made from them and the audio as well came from Abby’s Nintendo DSI. That is what the Nintendo Gameboy has developed in to nowadays! We still have Rob’s old green screen Gameboy around here somewhere!! It plays games, takes pictures, records audio, draws pictures, allows you to chat with other DSI users, and I’m sure a bunch of other stuff that I’m not aware of… And thanks for the kind words. It wasn’t my initial idea to fire the guy, that was a company decision that in hindsite was best for the department, but it was still hard. Love you guys,
    – Tom

Tom, you know you have to go by the company guidelines and so your hands are pretty much tied in regards to disciplinary measures. Dad understood your delema exactly. I loved the costume that Abby has on what a cutie she is!! The boys will be all over her one day (if that day hasn’t already arrived. Matt will be dating soon and little Luke will be coming up with new ideas to act upon that may or may not be good for him. I am so glad my child rearing days are behind me. I love my boys sooo much but I am too old to raise any now. I better get going now and I promise to send you the info on the family tree soon and I am going to send Karen an email so she can request to also be able to look at the site. XXXOOO’s

  • I can’t wait to see what all you and Karen can dig up for the Brown and Morgan families!!!! :0) Thanks Mom!!!
