It was an Early Morning Yesterday…I was Up Before the Dawn

So much for a slow down, eh? We ramped right back up this week. The weather has gotten better and better as the week progressed. Last Sunday Luke & I played outside in the warm sunshine, getting the truck ready for the season and creating a go kart track in the front yard – you should see him pop wheelies by the porch! On Monday, we started out in the 70s on the way in to work. However we had heavy storms all day and fell to the 40s by the time I was headed home late that night. I made up my mind I was staying until my annual report was finished and I finally accomplished my goal! Abby went to jazz dance class that evening. I got home just as Butler was tipping off in the championship game of the NCAA tourney. Even though they came up a little short again this year, it was still a hell of a ride. There was a funny picture that made it’s rounds throughout the day around this area that I had to share below. The game wasn’t funny though; it was awful. Even through they actually had a lead at halftime, both teams were awful. Butler was 12 of 64 shooting – or 18%…abysmal…the worst of all-time in a national championship game. They ended this magical season with a 28-10 record.

On Tuesday, Ann took the car to Enneking’s Body Shop for an estimate on the hood of her car. St. Farm has decided to pay for it, which is cool. Now that the Big Dance is over, I’m officially ready for baseball season. It just so happens that evening Luke had his first baseball practice. Oh man, was it cold out there! The wind was howling and it was cloudy, damp and just plain cold…but it was baseball, so warm days can’t be far away. Luke has two good friends on his team – Alex Dance and Seth Brandenburg…at least Ann will be happy in the stands this year! LOL We officially met our stop loss on health benefits already and it’s barely April – that’s sad. Mom sent me lots of info for our family tree site (thanks Mom!) and gave me lots of info that I never knew. At some point, I will put a link on our home page and possibly on our blog page as well. The direct link can be found a couple weeks ago in our blog entry or you can email me. Our email address is linked off our home page at www.scheumann.us.
We finally had a chance to carpool to work on Wednesday. Unfortunately, it would be our last day this week. What’s worse is it will be this way for another month or so and at the wrong time – gas is nearly $4 per gallon here! We enjoyed our only night off by playing / exercising outside in the lovely 70 degree weather. Alex and other neighborhood friends came to play with Luke & Abby. They suckered me in to a game of kickball until it was too dark to see outside. Ann made popcorn for American Idol night. I replaced her gas cap as she had her check engine light on and is having an issue with the fuel system pressure having a small leak. I hope it works! While we were out walking, I showed Abby how the trees and the other flora were in bloom. Matt and I have been sneezing all week.
On Thursday, Luke had baseball practice but we had to leave early to go out to Family Fun Night at the elementary school for some singing and learning about frogs. We hung out with Jeremy (Germy is what Lukey calls him) and his parents. We started in the gym where the kids sang a montage of environmentally conscious songs that were unfamiliar to my ears. Instead of what you’d expect for this type of thing – typical sing-along with lots of fun, upbeat numbers…the parents were left with a feeling of blasé as the tunes were a little dark, slow and depressing. However low key the singing portion was, the games half of the night was a 180 degree change. Wait till you see him in his frog hat! Although he originally didn’t want to go, I couldn’t drag him away by the end of it. He and Jeremy didn’t stop smiling the entire night as they listened to a story about a frog, got to keep a copy of the book, made a picture, hat and then played games in the gym…and when he won the hot potato game at the end of the night, it topped the evening off right. We closed the event down as they were removing tables when we were leaving. We walked out to a mostly empty parking lot. Ann took Bu to tap dance class which will be her final class before their first competition this weekend. The gals then went out to the high school for an After-Prom meeting. Ann is participating in this event even though we don’t have a kid going to prom this year. We were so mad that night when our favorite – Pia Toscano – was voted off American Idol. WTF?! I’ll bet the judges are kicking themselves in the ass now since they used their save on Casey. However, their loss was her gain as she has reportedly already signed a deal with Island Records and is supposedly already in the studio as of this weekend, recording her first record. We wish her luck…

Friday was a gorgeous day. I was supposed to help Gigi with some computer work at the station, but Luke ended up getting called in for a baseball practice that lasted until dusk. Bu went to bed early as did Luke. I took a long nap on the couch until Ann got home from scrapbooking. Saturday was an early morning as we started off at 4:30…well a couple pushes of the snooze bar later anyhow! 😉 We headed up to Indy for the annual Showstoppers Dance Competition. This year it was again held at Beech Grove High School. We were a few minutes late as we turned the wrong way on I-465 due to someone not printing off directions…I’m not saying who! We dropped the girls off and grabbed some BK for breakfast. We tried to take it back to the gals, but they were grump…uh, I mean very focused and busy. However, the focus paid off as Bu first performed in her jazz (sorry Abby, I know you call it hip-hop) routine with Baili in the duet entitled “Break Your Heart.” They did great! It was the highest she’s ever placed for this style of dance. They earned a 1st place gold and 3rd overall in her age category! Ann, I and others all thought they did even better; but this was a fine achievement for them. Check out the video below and you be the judge yourself. Come to find out, they missed platinum by a mere point…

Next up, Abby teamed with her tap class that has done very well in the past…this day would be no different. Their small group routine was entitled “Route 66” and was very intricate. They again executed it nearly flawlessly but we had a bit of a wait afterwards to find out how they did. So we had a quick lunch at KFC before the awards ceremony started. She earned a 1st place platinum with a 3rd place overall in their age category!! Although we agreed with the rating, we did not agree with the overall as the others were good but not as complicated…obviously we’re biased but we heard from others that felt the same way. I am thrilled and proud of Bu and all the girls and look forward to them competing again at the end of the month in Franklin. We headed over to Greenwood afterwards to get Abby’s iPod picked up at Best Buy. Ann was so mad when Abby got it home, got it charged and synched up, etc…only to find out the damn thing wouldn’t play any music (imagine that; expecting a music player to umm play music!). Abby chose Olive Garden for her celebratory dinner where the kids got fetuccini alfredo with chicken and I got mine with seafood – man was that dinner good!! We got home and it finally stopped raining (why does it always seem to rain on competition days??). It was really nice, actually. We exercised and played outside for about an hour and then chilled out the rest of the evening. I had a good, long talk with Mom B on the phone and I learned a LOT about our family history – good and bad – that I didn’t know before. The Grump twins (Luke & Ann) went to bed early and Matt, Abby & I enjoyed some Grater’s ice cream (thanks again, Phyllis & Dick!). Showstoppers allowed us to take pictures (even with flash) and didn’t say anything about video-taping; it was kind of cool, actually. We still bought the pro-shot video and would’ve bought every last one of their professional pictures, but they didn’t have a photographer. I really should’ve moved up front to get some good ones and will try to do it next year. I still got some decent ones I think….

On Sunday, we did our weekly clean-up around the house. I really need to do work out in the yard, but I also need a day off each week to keep from going insane, so the yard continues to suffer and I am actually okay with that… We went over to Mom & Sandy’s house for Jamie’s birthday party. It was very warm today, reaching all the way up to the 80s. Luke ended up having Alex over for a couple hours but before we knew it, we had half a dozen little ones running around out front, screaming in the sunshine. Abby went with Ann up to Greenwood to pickup a new iPod and go shopping for several hours. The Reds are off to a decent start. Although they lost again today, they are 6-3 on the young year and looking really good. We’ll keep an eye on them this year and Jamie wants Matt & I to attend a game with him soon at Great American Ballpark. I hope we can find an open weekend soon; we haven’t been in over a year…and on a sad note, Manny Ramirez has retired from baseball after testing positive for steroids again…what a dummy. Here are this week’s videos. We have one of Lukey and one of Abby. Also included, I have several of my old favorite shows from the early 1970s. Those of you alive back then might actually enjoy these…see how many you remember!

Next up is our Waybac feature. Leading off we start in 1989 for a picture of our dining room before Thanksgiving lunch; next up is another round of pictures from Christmas Day in 1990 with Aunt Lou Atha, Grandpa Brown, Mom and Dad B, Rob and I in our LaPorte living room; the 1991 Brown family reunion fish fry in Rossville in September with Kenny, Dorothy, Timmie, Dad B, Grandpaw Brown, Trudi, Homey, and Tammie; the ’92 Brown family Christmas at Dorothy & Timmy’s house with Uncle Timmy, Homey, Rob, Trudi, Debbie, Peggy, Larry, Kenny, Marilou, Tammy and Dad B; Rob & I in front of the Christmas tree in ’92 (whew…look at that Jim Morrison / John Lennon beard!) and Dad B passed out in ’93; next is a fun time at Pine Lake in June of 1998 in LP:

What great pictures Tom of Luke and Abby and I loved the Waybac one of Matt when he made that picture for Uncle Robby. It seems like only a couple of years that I remember when he did that. The videos were great also. Loved seeing Luke sing and doing Hot Potato! Wow Abby what a great dance routine!! Both of them were great!! I would have given you first all around also!! All of the girls worked for well together. I can see how much you have improved thru the years. Great going kiddo!! I haven’t looked yet at the old cartoon intro’s but I will and I remember all except Funky Phantom and Star Blazers. Can’t wait to see the Captain!! That was on when I was a young girl and I loved watching him. Cute, cute, cute!! I also enjoyed our talk the other night. I believe you need to know the truth about a few things in our family and get some of the facts straight in your mind. I love you and please give my love to all. XXXOOO’s

  • From Facebook; Aunt Judy wrote, “OMG….Abby has grown up so much…..she is all legs!!!! Lucky girl. Great dance pictures. Like the frog hat, too.”
