…And it’s a high, high Hill you’ve gotta Climb up before you get to the Top Again

This week marked my first week back to work. I was so ready to get back in to the swing of things. Having been at the facility for 20 years (November of this year), you get used to being in the same walls and seeing your coworkers, ya know? Luke played in the league championship game. We celebrated Independence Day and Abby & Luke were both in the 4th of July parade. However, we begin this entry with a look back at last Sunday where Luke and the U10 All-Stars competed in the Rushville tourney. In the 1st game, they squared off with the Greensburg Titans, a travel team from town. Luke batted clean-up and went 1-2 with a high fly out to left field, a walk and a double. He stole 4 bases and scored 2 runs. He played 1st base where he caught 2 pop-ups, fielded a grounder, was part of a dynamic 6-4-3 double play and caught 6 putouts. That got them in to the semifinals where they faced another travel team – this time out of Shelbyville, called the Sliders. At first I thought they were called the Slicers! Their colors were orange and black even! They were a tough little team and we battled back and forth with them. It looked like they would win and we made a few mistakes that only aided their efforts. We eventually tightened things up and won in the bottom of the 5th inning. Luke had the last at-bat and it was extremely nerve-racking for Ann & I! It was every little boy’s dream: 2 outs, bases loaded, full count and he fouled off several pitches before battling to a walk-off, game-winning base on balls. We were so proud of him. He again batted clean up in the lineup. He went 2-3 with a double, single, ground out and of course his game-winning RBI walk. He had 3 RBIs in the game, a stolen base (including his 1st ever caught stealing) and scored a run. The play of the game was by Luke’s buddy Oakley, who had an over-the-fence grand slam home run that went just past our seats, out in leftfield!! From there, the kids really stepped on the gas and played outstandingly in the tourney finals. They faced the home team, Rushville A all-star team. Luke was 3-3 with three singles, 2 RBIs (including the game winner again!) and a pair of stolen bases and probably scored a run or two, but I can’t remember now. They blew them out and won easily by 10-run-rule. Defensively, they shined in this game. Luke, of course, played 1st base again and made an amazing 3-5-3 double play, caught 6 assisted putouts at 1st and fielded a sharp groundball to end the game. Drew pitched for the first time this tourney and he pitched a 1-hit, complete game! The boys were so excited afterwards…as were the parents! We were a little disappointed that they didn’t get trophies, but only shirts. We joked that the Rushville A team probably got 2nd place trophies (Rushville is known for being a little crooked).

I returned to work on Monday morning. I decided to drive in the old Silverado (it just felt like a truck day) – call it a comfort thing. Matt worked a half-day and was sound asleep when I got home. Ann still needs to set him up with a checking account before he goes off to college. Luke and Abby slept in and kept cool as the day was very hot and humid. That evening, I met Ann at the ball diamonds where Bryan & I coached the boys in the league championship and the chance to win a 3rd championship in 4 days! We faced the Rangers, as we did back on Friday night when we won the tourney championship. Luke was on base 4 times while batting 3rd in the lineup. He was officially 3-3 with a walk, triple and a pair of singles. He had 6 stolen bases, 3 RBI’s and scored a run. Defensively, he played 2 innings at 1st base with no errors and pitched the final 3 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 1 hit while striking out 7 – including the final out of the season! We won 13-3 to put a perfect cap on the season. We ended the year 13-3 overall (could’ve been/should’ve been undefeated if not for me being a distraction and then kids missing games down the stretch) and went a perfect 9-0 over the past week! I think the best thing I heard was the opposing coach after the game he looked at me with a grin and uttered, “I hate losing to you guys.” Bryan took the kids out for ice cream at the Parkside Sweet Shop after the game, which was really cool. All the kids jumped in the back of my truck with Luke and we cruised over to the other side of the park for a tasty treat for putting up with all us parents’ requests for pictures in the heat with both their trophies. 😉 Afterwards, we met up with Bryan & Drew at El Reparo for dinner to celebrate a great year of baseball. Bryan had the toast of the evening over a cold mug of brew, “Now it’s time to focus on football!”

On Tuesday, it continued to be hot and humid, though we some rain and storms make their way through our area. Luke mowed part of the lawn for me in that heat. Abby’s Pirateers practice was cancelled due to moratorium week. She went with Luke & I out to get a new baseball (something I promised him a couple games ago) and run a couple of errands before stopping at the Sweet Shop for an ice cream for the kids and an ice tea for me. Abby drove us home in the Pacifica and did a terrific job. I was exhausted after not sleeping well last night and getting up early 2 days in a row. I fell asleep on the couch and slept through until morning.
I didn’t want to get up on Wednesday. Matt actually beat Ann & I out the door. Luke and Abby ran for about 2 hours today. Then Luke mowed the back yard. He was a tired pup when we got home that night. Luke and the all-star team were in the newspaper today and of course it was all over Facebook – we have a ton of new social media photos to share this week: Luke and the all-stars in the paper, along with the girl next door, Katie, who was crowned Ms. Decatur County!; Matt with Nathan when they were about 4; Matt with Bryce at Colton’s grad party; Abby learning a lesson about taking selfies on Angie’s phone; more of Luke & the All-Stars in Rushville from parents and then from the newspaper’s website; Barney with our old friend Barney at another Cub’s game; Barn with his oldest child; Gigi; Kimmy with friends; Aunt Sue; Aunt June camping with her girls and grandsons; Hayley and family; Seth and fiancé; Reese; Paul and his U8 team; Katie; Metallica headlining a huge concert in Europe; a great Calvin & Hobbes panel; Dad, Rob & Sharon on the beach at the Sand Pebble; Luke & Drew, Matt and Abby w/ Pirateers at the 4th of July Parade; Jack & Lyndz with Barney, Kimmy at Bayley’s on the 4th; Katie with kids & Jake; Missy with her nephew; a throwback picture of Keith & Rosie; a bunch of pix of Bayley’s wedding (congrats, Bill!); more of Kimmy, Lyndz and Barney; Bryan and his band in Indy; my favorite radio station on location in Madison; a special message form a Phi Delt house; Robert Plant’s newest single, “Rainbow”; and Matt’s friends/teammates who are very special – we wish the best for these three boys who are all enlisting in the armed forces – Joe in to the Navy (he was the Grand Marshal of our parade!) – congrats to Kenny & “Jo Mamma”; Joel to the Marines and Blake to the Army. Be safe and God’s speed, boys…

Thursday was a long day. I worked a double shift, including security for the evening fireworks display at the airport. There was again a huge crowd on-hand as the 25th edition of the Q-Mix Musical Fireworks again entertained everyone. We only had to run-off a handful of people this year. Jason & Lana brought their motor home. Michelle & Philip joined us this year! The kids were pretty good except when Luke tried to climb the fence in the back and it freaked out the girls in the facility. Ann brought a picnic dinner and we ate under the pop-up gazebo. The Faze Band again played for a couple hours across the street before the big fireworks display. The kids were a big help this year in getting things picked up and put away.

We were up early on Friday morning again for the Independence Day holiday. Luke and Abby were in the parade again this year. Matt watched with Ann, Gma and I on the corner of Franklin & Washington. Luke & Drew rode their bikes while Abby performed with the Pirateers. We went back over to Memaw & Gigi’s house for a huge lunch. We left there and ran some errands before fixing Gma’s kitchen sink and then running out to the Black Cat fireworks for Luke to get a few toys. We came back and took naps while the kids ran around outside. Luke mowed the front yard (without me asking) that night at about 9:30 before coming in for a shower. I was able to finally use my new C-pap that night and got the best night of rest in a very long time, here at the house.
We finally got to sleep in a little on Saturday morning. Ann & Matt got up and ran up to the bank to set up a checking account for Matt. Meanwhile, Luke & I picked up our old mower, ran to the bank and paid the bills. Matt got cleaned up and went out with his buddies Andy & Colton. Ann found us a replacement gas grill at Lowe’s so Luke, Bu & I ran over to Columbus in the old Silverado. We dropped off our broken-down mower at my work so Philip can puts with it and see if he can get it running for us. We then ran over to Lowe’s and picked up a new gas grill. It is a much nicer brand (Weber) but a much more basic model and looks dinky when compared to what we were used to! The kids helped me swap out grills and we even trimmed a couple trees before heading back to the comfort of the A/C. Ann & Bu went to the store and then cooked out on the new grill! It’s been a long time coming – we haven’t had a properly working grill since the tornado. Matt came home and went on to bed and crashed the rest of the night. Luke & Abby set off fireworks and ran around the house. And Ann & I chilled on the couch and watched TV.
On Sunday, we took it easy. We got our weekly chores done around the house and watched some NASCAR, some UFC, some MLB as well as some movies and rested up for my first full week of work in over a month.

As for the Shit that Luke Says – when asked why we aren’t having a 4th of July party, I said, we don’t have a pool, a grill nor an outdoor table any longer due to the tornado…he said, “How ‘bout we buy the fireworks and just use the stove, microwave and sprinkler?”

Next up is our video section which includes four family videos and several from around the internet this week…

That does it for this week’s entry of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Mom.
Later, Scheu
