Changed like a Leaf on a Tree…Blown away Forever

There were signs of autumn everywhere that reminded me why this is my favorite time of year – all the colors of nature and all the special days (Abby, Aunt Sharon, cousin Kathy, Dad Scheu, Keith, Rob, Nathan and I all have birthdays with in about a month of each other…not to mention Ann & I’s anniversary. There are festivals and special beers. The landscape is starting to change as the first leaves began falling from the trees and the farmers began harvesting their fields. The crickets and locusts are starting to fade from earshot. The weather was awesome (what is better than shorts with a hoodie?) and the house was open for much of this week…and of course there are all the awesome sports – baseball and NASCAR are entering their playoff stretch (when it actually gets interesting!) and of course there’s football everywhere!!
Abby was in early on Monday to talk with her math teacher (but we figured she secretly wanted to meet up with a boy or something). Ha-ha, Bu! Abby went to Kama’s after school and then on to Pirateers practice. Ann took her on to tap class at Dixon that night. Luke & I had football pictures at North Park with our favorite photographers (Artisitic) with the cool Pirate truck again before getting down to business with a good football practice. It was Aunt Sharon’s birthday…and her first without Uncle Dan.
Tuesday was a big day – it was Ann & I’s 19th anniversary. Time has really flown… We had football again that evening. It was again a really good one. We called Dad Scheu and Keith that evening to sing Happy Birthday and catch up with them.
Abby had a SADD meeting on Wednesday. Luke & I walked out in the neighborhood while playing catch with a football. Ann made chili for dinner. Abby had her friends Brittney and Kirsten over again to work on homework projects. Abby & Luke brought home their school pictures and I thought they turned out great (though I may be a bit biased, I suppose)…

On Thursday, Abby ran around with her Pirateers friends until practice started. She later went to jazz class at Dixon. Luke & I had football practice that evening, where we spent most of the night scrimmaging the 4th graders. It gave us a chance to really work out some kinks in our defense and gave Bryan and I a great idea for a new defensive scheme to address some issues we’ve seen the past couple games.
Matt came home on Friday afternoon. It was homecoming and lots of kids came home, including several of Matt’s football friends. Bryan & I kept stats at the game where the Pirates got absolutely destroyed. Abby and her Pirateers performed at halftime and then she went with Student Council and helped setup for the big dance. Our old neighbor, Ryan won the homecoming king! Matt and his buddies ended up going out to eat at the same place Ann & I took the kids for dinner – Wings & Rings. It was great to see them all together again – especially Joel, who was back from basic training with the Marines in California.

We were up early on Saturday for the Fall Festival kickoff. After getting the oil changed in the Pacifica, we headed to the parade downtown and Abby was in it with her Pirateers teammates. We sat with Mom O and a few of Ann’s extended family joined us. Gigi was also in the parade in the WTRE crew as well as our neighbor Katie who is the reigning Ms Decatur Co. Of course, there were loads of cool cars and some fun moments as well. Next we headed up to watch Luke and his teammates play football. We again returned to North Dearborn elementary – Bryan’s old stomping grounds. We were playing the Sunman – North Dearborn Trojans, who were ranked #2 in the league. We felt like we had a good scheme. The question was could we get the kids fired up to play the game. We had a key player on our team miss the game when his parents texted Bryan saying he was too sick to play ball. We also had another starter out with a bad knee, though he is still playing basketball on Luke’s travel team. So we had 12 kids suited up for the game and prayed we didn’t have too many injuries. Luke played the entire game, as did most of the boys. It was warmer than it had been all week, but that didn’t even have any effect. The boys came out and fought hard in that game. Bryan & I were very proud of their effort. Luke played tight end, linebacker and kicker. He caught his first pass of the season and did a great job of blocking. He did OK at kicking, but it was his defense that really stood out. He excelled at middle linebacker, making several fine tackles. He got his name called several times by the announcer. Bryan & I had a special scheme for this game as we had to adjust for the missing players. We ran a 6-4-1 we called the Red Trojan. The kids really responded. We ran blitzes, stunts and even changed our defense as needed. We got turnovers and several stops. We again gave up one long play each half that accounted for their scores but held during their point-after attempts. We just couldn’t do anything offensively but we again have things to build on and will look to score our 2nd win next week against Rushville to end our regular season. The problem is that this was the final game for one of our best athletes and the young man that threw the completion to Luke today. So Bryan and I will have to adjust once again to attempt to create a scheme that best utilizes the kids we have for the game…it should be interesting. Luke & I rode up and back with Bryan and Drew as usual. We stopped at Bryan’s favorite place – Skyline Chili – for an early dinner. We decided not to attend the events at the Fall Festival this year as the entertainment and the festival in general has really been going downhill for a few years now and seems to be geared towards a different crowd. Instead, we headed out to Bryan & Angie’s house for a bonfire where we enjoyed spending time relaxing with our good friends. Matt even joined us later in the night after he was done hanging out with his buddies. Luke ended up spending the night with Drew as he finally got un-grounded. We think that he was able to make a change in his behavior because he was able to get more sleep.

We were up early on Sunday to do our weekly household chores like paying bills, doing laundry and grocery shopping. Ann & Matt went to the store and we got Luke back from the Messers, who headed up to Indy for the big Colts game. Amy’s mom, Mary dropped off Abby’s candy-corn (shaped only) birthday cake as we had her family party. Ann made burgers on the grill for lunch and Mom, Gigi, Phyllis & Dick came over for cake and ice cream. After opening presents (and a lovely rendition of the Birthday Song), we settled in for a long day of game time in high def on the big screen! After Purdue’s tough loss yesterday, the Colts and Cowboys both had big victories. Jeff won the chase race at the Monster Mile and went away with a trophy of Myles and made his way in to the next phase of the chase playoffs. Matt went back to school and Ann & Abby went shopping. Abby & I watched the big Simpsons season opener and then the historic Simpsons/Family Guy crossover episode before finally calling it a night. We’ll have pictures and video of Abby’s party today in next week’s blog entry. We have several new social media pictures to share this week: Barn and his family; Missy & Mindy with Kathy on her birthday; Robert Plant was on TV a couple times this week; The Simpsons/Family Guy crossover promo; Gracie; Lindsey w/ the Colts kicker; Wendy and her family; Columbian Park; Metallica playing in a prison; Grace Potter rocking the vote; Zack Wylde played the Experience Hendrix show; Calvin & Hobbes panels featuring Spaceman Spiff; GPN came out of the studio to play Red Rocks; Bryan, Drew & Rick spreading straw on the new grass as their home is coming along nicely; and several great photos of Abby and her Pirateers.

Next up is our Waybac section, which includes two precious photos of Mother – we’re getting down to the last few photos from Mom’s boxes. After I finish with this batch of photos (probably near the end of the year), I will work on my big box of scrapbook items that I recently unearthed. We lead off this week in 1979: more from the Rose Bowl parade in January in Pasadena; Aunt Brenda & Uncle Steve’s family at their house in Michigan with Uncle Ralph, Wendy & Steven in June; Father’s Day at Aunt Norma & Uncle Ralph’s house with Grandpaw Brown, Great Grandpa Morgan and Uncle Ralph’s dad (I think) in June, Dad & I building Rob’s changing table in our garage in Temple City in July; Grandpaw’s Morning Glory in his backyard in Lafayette; flowers from Dad’s work that were delivered to Mom in the LA hospital where Rob was born in October; Mom with Rob at 8 days old in our kitchen in Cali; Rob at Thanksgiving in our living room in TC; and Rob getting a bath in our kitchen sink in December. Next we move on to Christmas of 1982 with Rob, Mom & I; Grandmaw Brown’s 40th high school reunion in January 1983; Bishop Grutka, Rob and I at my Confirmation at St. Peters of LP in September of 1984; Rob & I at our birthday party at Grandmaw & Grandpaw’s house in Lafayette in October of ’84; Rob & I at Disney World in April of ’86; Rob’s badge of honor from his go kart wreck out behind our house in August of ’86 (I think?) – he crashed his Thorn Apple Valley Special Indy car in to the back of our neighbor’s truck and cracked his skull on the bumper (no helmet) at full throttle around a corner, which was about 25 mph…ouch! I thought he was dead when it happened; Rob’s 1st day of school at Riley in LP during Sept ’86; Rob’s birthday with the neighborhood crew in October ’86; and finally Paul & I at Brown Co State park and then at his apartment in about 1991.

Our final section is our video section, which includes three new family videos and several from around the internet.

That does it for this week’s episode of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Momma…and I know that you would also have loved this week since this was also your favorite time of the year as well.
