New Fang…New Fang – They Can’t Wait

It has been a long, cold week. Although it went fast, both Ann & I had long work weeks – something we blamed on the full moon this week. We kept very busy around the house as the farmers finished harvesting their fields. We spent much of our time indoors and the days are definitely getting shorter and shorter. We welcomed a new addition to the family and officially began winter sports as the nation went through a transition at the polls.
Monday started the week off cool but unfortunately as warm as it would be all week. After school, Luke had his first basketball practice (he is again participating in the competitive travel league called Dirt Road Basketball. They have approximately 20 teams this year and so have split them into two divisions – North and South (ours). We will mercifully have several games in Decatur County (G’burg, ND & SD). Ann took Abby to jazz class later that evening. While Luke had practice, I got my butt back on the treadmill, which was a trend this week…
Tuesday was Election Day. It was a midterm election but there were a few local choices of interest. As has been our tradition for the past 15 years or so, we took Gigi a fountain drink while she covered the returns at the courthouse. It just wasn’t the same this year without Matthew however… Gigi’s cousin won the sheriff election. Our nation’s House & Congress became an overwhelmingly red nation as Republicans dominated the election. Abby went to school early for Student Council, went to Kama’s house after school and then on to Pirateers practice a little later. Luke’s football practice was cancelled due to the cold and rain, which allowed me to get back on the treadmill. We were slated to meet the children from the exchange program in China but there was some sort of mix-up in the itinerary and everything was pushed back a day.

We left work early to meet up with the other parents at the elementary school and meet our Chinese exchange student, “Alan” Fang. We took him to meet Memaw and Gigi before coming home to play. The boys spent time getting to know each other better that evening. They drew pictures, rode bikes and played basketball while I walked the neighborhood. Bu had Britney over for dinner and homework (but no soup!). Ann did make a really good dinner that night (caramelized chicken). We have lots of new social media pictures to share from this week: Hanna & Angie; Seth & Hannah; Bryan Christmas at Kate & Jake’s; Haley & Parker; Luke; Mark won his election for School Board(!); Kathy; Wendy’s daughter, Bethany; Grace getting the word out; Plant & Page in the media lately; Hot Wheels at SEMA; Columbian Park stuff; Katie & Reese; Danny & big sis; Slicers win the Sectional!!; the Allman’s final show; the Simpsons-Futurama crossover episode from this week; and a cute one of Bu with the Target dog.

Thursday was cold and rainy again. Abby went with Kama after school before Pirateers practice. Luke’s football practice was again cancelled due to the cold and precipitation. Abby had tap class that night. Luke, Alan & I went to Wal-Mart to get supplies for dinner and check out the new Hot Wheels. The boys had fun racing their Hot Wheels down the track before a dinner of mashed potatoes with chicken noodles that helped warm us up at the end of a long, cold day. Jimmy Page was on Letterman that night. I’ll have to find video to share next week.

Abby was in early to school again on Friday – this time for Jr. Optimist meeting at the high school. It was Sectional Championship night. LaPorte hosted Mishawaka and won! Congratulations to the boys and coaching staff of the Slicer football team for accomplishing something my class was never able to achieve. That night, Ann & I were supposed to take the kids to see the Chautauqua at the high school where several celebrities were on-hand, including Ed Asner! Instead, we helped Bryan & Angie move in to their new home. They also have a couple of the Chinese exchange students, so it was good for Alan to be with his classmates for a while. By the time we got there, there wasn’t much left to do but we did what we could and then helped them christen it with the first house party. We had good time, including Alan who was able to meet up with two other students from his class. We got home late and didn’t get much sleep that evening.

We were up early on Saturday. Luke had a basketball practice and scrimmage against the 6th graders. Considering it was only our 2nd practice, I thought they did pretty good. Obviously there is much room for improvement. Afterwards we picked up the girls, met up with Bryan & Angie again and took all the kids out to the big Meyer farm out in the western side of Decatur County. It is a humongous farm and they were nice enough to allow us to watch them harvest their first batch of popcorn. The kids got to ride in the combine and tractors. Afterwards we drove up to U Indy to show Alan the college. We took Matt out to lunch at O’Charley’s but he wouldn’t let us see his dorm room for some unknown reason…hmmm… We came home and the Alan went to sleep instantly and the rest of us watched a couple movies on the big screen. And I talked to Dad for about an hour. It was good to have a long talk with him and miss him dearly…

We slept in on Sunday. We did our weekly chores around the house before heading over to the junior high school for Luke’s first two basketball games. We faced off with South Decatur in the opening game. Luke did not start but did get several minutes of playing time. He had 6 points on 3-6 shooting from the field. He had a couple blocks and 7 rebounds as we won the game easily, 65-16. Next, we faced the Connersville 2 team. Again, Luke did not start but played several minutes at center and power forward. I don’t think he scored but may have gotten off a short. He had a pair of rebounds and a couple of nice hustle plays, as he did in the first game. Overall he saw considerably less PT in this game. The Pirates starters looked great and played the majority of the game and we won easily again, 51-26 to start our year off 2-0!! We came home and Alan went to bed again. He wouldn’t get up for dinner – and it was a good one. Ann cooked steaks on the grill (though we are still having issues with this new one leaking as well now – I wonder if it is an issue with the tank) with red potato wedges and grilled veggies. We finished off the day watching football and the NASCAR race, which Jeff finished 2nd in the race but Newman put Larson in the wall in the last turn of the last lap to take his position and nudge him ahead of Jeff in points by 1, which eliminated Gordon from the championship chance next weekend. The Cowboys won over in England, Peyton’s Ponies won big in Oakland and the Colts were idle.
