…Freeze my Very Soul

It continues to get dark earlier and earlier. Now it’s nighttime by the time we get home each night. I think we are suffering from seasonal affective disorder. If that wasn’t depressing enough, there was news of Bill Cosby’s secret life everywhere and one of the greatest directors/producers of our time, Mike Nichols [the man responsible for the Second City comedy troupe, directed many classic films such as The Graduate (Dustin Hoffman), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Liz Taylor/Richard Burton), Carnal Knowledge (Jack Nicholson) and The Birdcage (Robin Williams) and original theatrical productions such as the Odd Couple], passed away this week. He was one of a very short list of entertainers who have won the Oscar, Grammy, Emmy and Tony Awards. We got our first dose of winter…but not the nightmare that Keith & Rosie received. With the colder weather and all the snow, we started thinking about putting up the Christmas tree. It gradually got warmer as the week progressed, but it also brought rain with it. Hello and welcome to another edition of the Scheu Family Blog.
It snowed all night Sunday and on & off all day on Monday. We got about three inches…but that was NOTHING compared to Keith & Rosie who would eventually end up with six feet!! It was bitter cold with temps in the single digits and a wind chill below zero. Luke had basketball practice and I had every intention of getting back on the treadmill while he was on the court…but by the time we got home, got Luke to practice, ran to the pharmacy, grocery store and Wal-Mart, installed new windshield wipers, got Luke picked up and ate dinner (one of our faves – cheesy popcorn!), I was done with it all. It had been a crazy day at work and so I sat down to watch MNF and promptly fell asleep for the night in our new recliners. Abby had jazz class that evening and I was out cold by the time the girls got back home.

Abby was in to school early for Student Council on Tuesday. She didn’t feel good all day again. It was another cold one – only in the teens. That evening Abby had Pirateers practice after school. We had Mom & Sandy over for dinner to celebrate Memaw’s birthday. She stopped counting, so we’re not sure which number this one was! LOL Ann made Maryann’s favorite meal – spaghetti w/ meat sauce and garlic bread – yum! We sang the birthday song and had cake before calling it an early night. I did get back on the treadmill that evening – finally…now I need to get back on the diet and start losing some weight! Bryan & I are supposed to start working out at the Y next week, so hopefully that will help also.

Wednesday was still cold, but it finally made it above freezing. We were sad to turn in Luke’s football equipment at North Park. It was a long season, but now we miss it. It was Soup Night again with the Homework Club in attendance as Bu had Britney & Trevin over for the evening. This week’s soup was chili – great for such a cold night. Ann went out with Angie and the girls that evening and I fell asleep on the recliner – shocker.
As the snow continued to sprinkle us here at home on Thursday, Keith & Rosie continued to get dumped on in East Aurora with lake-effect snow (the kind we used to get up in LaPorte!). The whole town is shut down. There are thousands of stranded vehicles on the streets and highways. We are worried that the snow may damage their roof and we pray that their electricity will hold out. Everyone is stuck at home as school and businesses are all closed. Abby had Pirateers practice & tap class that evening while Ann worked at the Blue/White basketball game as a coat-checker to raise funds for the Pirateers. I was surprised to see our couches and desk still in the front yard…along with a notice from the city that they will fine us if it is still there next week (we thought for sure someone would’ve picked them up by now!). We’ll have to get rid of them this weekend.

Friday started off cold (cars still had to defrost in the morning) again but got decent as the day went along. It was another long, crazy day for Ann & I at work (it’s been that way all week…). Abby went in early for Jr Optimist Club. Ann went out on a play date with Amy in Columbus that evening. Luke & I set up a new computer for him while Bu did homework and watched Netflix. Later, Luke played on his iPod doing Face Time with his girlfriend and Drew while I watched a couple movies and fell asleep in the recliner, enjoying a quiet night. Metallica wrapped up its week-long residency at the Late, Late Show for Craig Ferguson’s final show…and congratulations are in order for my amazing LaPorte Slicers football team who won their 5A Semi-State battle tonight as well as to the neighboring New Prairie Cougars (also LaPorte county!) who won their 2A semi-state game. Now both are on to the State finals game at Lucas Oil Stadium next week!! GO SLICERS! We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: Luke; Kimmy and Uncle John; Barney, Billy & wives in Mexico; Courtney & Cassie in Vegas; Metallica on Craig Ferguson; Calvin & Hobbes; Abby; Luke; Barney; LP Slicers football winning Semi-State; more Metallica and Mom & Gigi.

Saturday was just another busy day as we were up early for Luke to get to basketball practice. We paid the bills, winterized the mowers and other lawn equipment, moved the old couches and desk out to the Evans’ barn their big burn pile going in the spring, did some weekly chores around the house and rearranged our furniture in the living room and play room. Even Molly ran an errand with us as the temps soared up in to the 50s! We had planned to put up the tree and decorate the house for Christmas but Ann was too tired and besides, we won’t have Thanxmas this year because Rosie is still on the mend. Later, Abby enjoyed her new surroundings in the playroom and Luke & I watched movies as Ann slept the day away. Later, I went over to Bryan’s house to have a few drinks and a stick with the boys around the fire pit. It rained on and off the rest of the evening.

We finally got to sleep in on Sunday. It rained all day and night. We got over an inch of it…too bad it wasn’t snow! We did a few household chores while Megan came over to visit Abby for awhile. Later we road tripped to Milan for Luke’s basketball games. First up, we faced Connersville 1. The 1st half was tight but we pulled away after half time. All the kids got playing time, including Luke who got several minutes of playing with the starters. He got a couple points and rebounds as we won 35-17. After an hour break, we were back on the court. This time we faced Rushville, who was no match for our boys. Again, everyone got to play in this game. Luke played about half the game and scored four points with eight rebounds. It was never close and we won a laugher, 43-15. We came home and finished up our weekly chores as Ann made popcorn for dinner. We watched Peyton’s Ponies come from behind and then the Cowboys faced the Giants on SNF that went right down to the end of the game but the Cowboys somehow managed to also come from behind with a late TD from Romo to Bryant despite an amazing catch by Odell Beckham – the best catch since I’ve seen since that amazing catch by another Giant receiver in the Super Bowl! Now I can’t wait to see them in four days on Thanksgiving Day vs. the Eagles along with the Bears/Lions and Seahawks/Niners games that day. It should be a great day of food & football again this year…
