It was Twenty Years Ago Today…

It was nice to have the house opened up for several days this week, though summer is not going away without a fight. At least with the air on we can’t hear that damn cricket that I swear is right outside our bedroom window! The daylight hours are getting less and less each day and the locusts are now few and far between. Increasingly, the farmers have begun harvesting their fields, the trees are not only turning but the leaves are falling as well, the geese have begun flying south and the sun now sets in a different part of the sky and blinds me at the dinner table.
It was a slow morning on Monday and it was a long day for everyone. I think we were all a little moody that morning. Abby had Pirateers practice after school and later went to Dixon Dance Studio with Ann for jazz class. Meanwhile Luke had football practice. I think we suited up seven boys that night. This is a bye week for us this weekend, which comes at a good time for us so we can get healthy. We had a decent practice even though Coach Messer wasn’t able to attend. Coach Nobbe came up with a new offense called the Sledge Hammer which looks promising. Lord knows it can’t hurt after getting shutout last week. As promised, we have pictures of Abby’s birthday party from last Sunday.

We were up before the butt-crack of dawn on Tuesday. Ann and I headed in to CRH for Ann’s much-needed knee surgery. Gma took the kids to school for us (thank you!) that morning. Abby had Student Council before school. Ann did great as she had her meniscus was repaired. Turns out she did not have one major event but rather eight smaller events until it finally gave out on her. The work was done by the same surgeon that we used for Matt’s repairs. And like Matt, she came home with a cooling, compression wrap, which has helped to keep down the swelling. It’s funny; the dogs know she is not feeling well and have taken very good care of her, snuggling and staying by her side this whole week. They won’t know what to do with themselves when she goes back to work. Luke and the sixth grade Pirates had football practice again that night. We again had seven dressed for practice. It is so hard to do the things you want to do when you only have half a team on the field. I sometimes question whether we should even continue with the season at this point. Britney came over for Homework Club but Soup Night was obviously cancelled. In its place Abby & Brit made it Pasta Night with a surprisingly good spaghetti and meatball dinner for Ann (and all of us)! Good job girls!! They worked pretty hard and did some studying as well…and yet still had time to get a quick cat nap in somehow. :p
Wednesday was Ann & I’s 20th wedding anniversary! I took the day off again to stay with my ailing honey. We exchanged gifts in bed this year. I got a really nice watch and she received a Pandora bracelet and a ring. It was the fall equinox of course and I for one am ready for autumn. Again the dogs did a better job of snuggling up with Ann on the couch than her husband. We took naps all day and got Chinese takeout for lunch. Abby did not have Pirateers practice. The downtime allowed me to finally binge-watch a show I’ve wanted to see for some time now called Grace & Frankie (Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen & Sam Watterson). What a uniquely funny and smart show – and the theme song is done by Grace Potter!

Because Ann started to get along better, I decided to go back to work on Thursday…and man it was such a long day. Luke’s football practice was cancelled due to having a bye-week. With the night off, Luke played outdoors with his friends around the neighborhood. Abby & I decided to go for a long walk and later she went on to tap class. Noah picked her up and they went out for a while and then came to the house to hang out with the old folks.
Friday was another long day. Ann continued to nurse her ailing knee. She had some work drama she unfortunately had to deal with all day. By the time I got home, she was pretty upset but composed herself. Luke ended up going over to his girlfriend Anna’s house for a bonfire party. Meanwhile, Abby & Kama came with Bryan & I to the varsity football game at Franklin County. While the girls were there to support Noah and the boys, Bryan & I again kept stats for the team. It was a back-and-forth contest that the Pirates should’ve won but somehow managed to come up just a bit short. We stopped by Skyline Chili for a quick dinner before coming home. Noah came over afterwards to process the loss. I worked on Luke’s computer, upgrading it to Windows 10. We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: dinner at ElRep; Abby with her friends; Amy & Gigi looking silly; Bu’s flowers from her man; “Shitty Ann” coming out; Angie; Courtney & Cassie; Ann & I as Peanuts characters (new movie coming soon); Colts on MNF; Romo out for Cowboys; Barney watching the playoff-bound Cubbies; Frye welcoming Autumn; some classic electronic games that Rob & I had as kids; one of my favorite songs like I’ve never seen presented before (and the #1 song in the world when I was born!); Bu & Pirateers; Brother Burt Reynolds; the final time for the #24 at Chicagoland; more Bu and Pirateers; more Abs with friends; Hall of Famer Yogi Berra died this week; I enjoyed several classic Dr. Who episodes this week with my doctor, Tom Baker; the final paint scheme of Jeff’s legendary career was unveiled; Grace preps for her fall tour; the Dynamic Duo and Sean Lee was named NFC defensive player of the week thanks in part to his double-digit tackles and that big INT in the endzone last week.

We were up early on Saturday to run Abby out to the high school, where she met up with members of the Jr Optimist Club. Together, they volunteered to pick up trash along Hwy 3, just past North Decatur. Her mother and I are very proud of her. While she was out working, Luke & I went out Hot Wheels hunting until it was time to pick her up. When we got home, Luke & I mowed and trimmed at home and then went over and worked on Mom & Sandy’s lawn. Abby finally got her final birthday present. Her new headboard is the perfect touch on her room makeover. Luke had no football game today due to it being our bye week. But we will more than make up for it next week as we will be forced to play a makeup game vs. the #1 team in the league…I’m still trying to talk Bryan in to forfeiting to his alma mater; I mean, what is the point? We had several kids in and out of the house all day. We watched Purdue blow another football game and we replaced our fire extinguishers so Luke enjoyed discharging our old one in the backyard before we recycled it. Luke had Alex and Oakley over and they ran around the neighborhood, eventually ending up over at Anna’s house for a little while. Abby had Megan over for a while and then Noah came over. Luke went with Alex and Megan to a party out in the country and then stayed the night at Alex’s house. Meanwhile Ann got cleaned up and we got her out of the house for the first time since her surgery. We took Abby & Noah out to eat at ElRep. We came home and watched a couple movies on the big screen.
We finally got a chance to sleep in on Sunday morning. Although it didn’t ever storm like they had forecast this weekend, it did sprinkle on and off as a cold front moved in yesterday. We were able to finally open up the house again last night, after closing it up the past few days. It was a gorgeous morning with a soft breeze. Luke stayed with Alex until the afternoon, the girls went out for breakfast and I got a jump on our weekly household chores so I could focus on important Sunday afternoon things like football and racing. The Colts somehow pulled out their first victory of the season, the Cowboys lost their first game and Jeff became NASCAR’s Iron Man with his 789th straight start – never missing a race since he first suited up, passing Ricky Rudd. After breakfast, Bu went out with Noah to spend the day at his grandparent’s farm. We have some miscellaneous pictures from the past week or so: Abby playing softball last weekend, Bu working the highway cleanup crew, Luke & Drew in the back of the truck as we headed to practice on Monday night, Luke and the extinguisher, Luke kicking field goals (he made 1 from 30 yards in this picture) at practice on Tuesday, some old pix I found at work and this week’s Friday night lights adventure in Brookville.

Next up is our Waybac section which continues to feature our first six photo albums from when we were just starting out, twenty years ago. We lead off again in March of ’96 at CRH with newborn Matt with his Gigi, Daddy and Uncle Paul & Jenny; then feeding time for our little birdie in Columbus in August ’96; then on to Matt’s first birthday in Columbus in March ’97; Matt at the circus in Indy in October ’97; our little cutie at his 1st computer and then on his new swing set in March ’98 in Greensburg; and finally Matt with Gma at the county fair and also on my old (actually Mom’s old) rocking chair in July of 1998.

Our final segment is our videos. This week we have one new family home movie and a few from around the internet.

And that does it for this week’s entry of the Scheu Family Blog. Thanks for keeping up with us this time out and we’ll catch up with you again next time. Until then, have a good one. We miss ya, Mom.
Later, Scheu
