It’s Over, it’s Done – The End is Begun

OK; I guess I take back what I said about Phil last week…turns out he was right – we are having an early spring! We surely had to set some records this week – February is supposed to be the coldest month of the year…but it certainly felt like spring around here. Luke had an easy week, focusing solely on track and school. Abby was super busy as usual with dance and her friends. Matt stayed up at school again this week but didn’t forget his roots. Although Ann isn’t limping quite as badly as before, her knee still aches constantly…now if we can just get her to stop coughing incessantly! …poor thing… And I continued to exercise each day as the flags were flown at half-staff this week for the death of Supreme Court Justice Scalia. And it was Speed Week at Daytona which can only mean one thing – NASCAR is back!
But the week started off a little different than how it ended. We had a winter mix overnight that caused the kids to have a two-hour delay on Monday morning (President’s Day). Abby had Pirateers practice until very late, causing her to miss her jazz class at Dixon. This was their final practice of the year. Luke had track practice after school and is interested in running some sprints this spring for the junior high school…but I think he could also do some endurance races as well if he put his mind to it. I got on the treadmill after work and Ann made us one of our faves for dinner – salmon patties! It was Grammy night and there were some cool tribute performances that night that I have posted below – the Eagles (Glenn Frey), the Hollywood Vampires (Lemmy) & Lady Gaga (Bowie). But first we have some pictures from Abby’s volleyball game that I promised last week.

It started to get warmer on Tuesday. Much of the snow melted, which allowed me to get back on the People Trail after work. Luke did not go to track practice. Abby and the Pirateers danced at the boys’ basketball game vs. Seymour. Abby was voted the Most Valuable Pirateer! Way to go, Bu!! She later worked the coat check so we stayed for the whole game. Mom & Dee sat with us that night, as did Bryan & Angie. Later, we enjoyed the return of Rizzoli & Isles to TV.
Wednesday was a fast day. The warming trend continued and Abby & the Pirateers had their final performance of the year. It was Senior Night at the boys’ basketball game and although we bailed at halftime, we got home late again that evening. Because of that, Bu did not work at Dixon that evening.

Thursday was very nice, weather-wise, which again allowed me to walk after work. Luke had track practice after school again. Ann had an After-Prom meeting and then went with Mom & Sandy to the annual “Dancing with the (Greensburg) Stars” fundraiser. Although our good friends Bryan & Angie didn’t participate this year, apparently they talked Bryan in to judging the competition. Meanwhile, Abby had tap class at Dixon Dance and I watched the Twin 125s at Daytona – which were very exciting. I must admit thought that it was weird with Jeff in the booth and not on the track this year.
Friday was a lovely though blustery day. It was sunny but with sustained winds. It had some nasty gusts of 40+ mph. Both Ann & I had haircuts with Jami. I again hit the People Trail and found a new route – one that allowed me to get all the way to my buddy Dennis’ house. Abby & Ann road-tripped up to Crawfordsville to meet up with our good friends, the Guards, and watch their son Devin play varsity basketball. That allowed Luke & I to have a guys’ night. We ate dinner at Big Boy, went Hot Wheel hunting and then watched scary movies. I introduced Luke to Freddy Krueger as we watched the original Nightmare on Elm St. Unfortunately he got a little too scared and refused to watch Hellraiser with me afterwards. We also heard from Matt, who went across town to catch the wrestling state finals. And the truck race at Daytona had a really exciting wreck at the end! We have lots of new social media pictures to share this week: several with Abby and her friends; Abby and the Pirateers; congrats to Rob on his real estate license and for finally making it to Facebook & Twitter this week!; Molly & Lola; Cathy & Tom; Steve & Bethany; Aunt Karen with Kathy & Curtis and Emily & Camille ice skating; our friends Courtney & Cassie; congrats to Coach Dungy & Marvin for recently making it in to the NFL Hall of Fame; Camille at Mackey; Monica at her new job; and a few more of our buddies C&C who recently got married (congrats guys!!).

Saturday was an amazing day. We turned off the heat and opened up the house as temps soared to the mid-seventies. Surely we’ve had to set some sort of record for this time of year?? Ann was up early and out the door with Abby & Luke to go get haircuts with Jami in Columbus. Luke was distraught because Bu was getting some extra hair stuff done and it was going to take hours. I got Tonya’s oil changed and rescued Luke. We did some more Hot Wheels hunting and then had lunch at Ruby Tuesdays. Meanwhile, Ann came home and took a nap while Abby went up to Indy with Kama & Britney. By the time they got back, the Dance sisters were already here visiting with us and waiting on the girls to return. They all went out on a triple date again and were out until late. Matt was back at the wrestling state finals. Luke & I came back from Columbus and picked up Drew, who was working for Bryan at Mesco. The boys played all afternoon: flew kites, rode bikes, got ice cream at Dairy Point, played football with the neighborhood kids and even flew Luke’s drone (its first flight since Christmas). Ann made cheesy popcorn for dinner and we watched a couple movies and the big Purdue / IU game. Unfortunately the Boilers came up a little short at Assembly Hall, losing by 4 points. The girls came home late with the boys and they had fun hanging out in the family room. Megan & Britney ended up spending the night. It stormed overnight, bringing with it some cooler air unfortunately.
We enjoyed sleeping in on Sunday morning. Megan went home and the girls went shopping so Ann could make us biscuits and gravy. Denny Hamlin won the Daytona 500. I wasn’t sure who to root for – all my favorites are retired or injured. Still, it was a great finish – the closest of all time. That afternoon we ran Abby over to St Mary’s for CYO volleyball. She and the Turtles took on Enochsburg. Although they were down three good players, they swept all three games pretty easily. Afterwards she went out on a date with a new friend. We dropped off Barney at Acra’s and did some grocery shopping before coming home to finish up our weekly household chores and wrapped up the week with new episodes of our favorite shows – the Simpsons and the Walking Dead.
