…There’s no way Back…Bang your Head

It was a weird week for us. Outside of Luke playing in a football game, we didn’t really have much of anything else going on…not that we are complaining. Of course, that wasn’t by choice but rather by necessity as Abby finally got a diagnosis. …And although it wasn’t what she wanted to hear, it certainly could’ve been worse – in fact, it’s probably the best possible outcome. Now we just wait and see. Matt had a quiet week at school. We had the house closed up all week with the air on as the final days of summer reminded us that it’s not quite autumn just yet. The farmers began harvesting their fields. Ann’s knees continued to give her a hard time and she had to ice them nightly. And I continued to walk as much as possible, getting in 13 miles this week. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
It was a hot start to the week though the humidity was lower. Luke had football practice after school. Abby had soccer practice then went out to dinner with her friends. I walked 2 miles after work. Ann spoke to Abby’s doctor today, re: all the tests from last week. They all came back negative…except one – turns out she has a concussion. We aren’t sure how long or what type of things will occur in the coming weeks, but it comes at a tough time for her: she is so busy with her school work, she’s involved in three sports, she has all her extracurricular stuff at school (class VP, Student Council, Jr Optimist, etc.), plus she is working. We hope to hear from a concussion specialist this week but our family doctor has asked that she stay home from school for now and have no activity other than sleeping, resting, eating and using the restroom. She is to be in low light with no stimuli, which means staying inside with no TV, no loud music, no reading, no homework, no phone (good luck with that one)…all in order to let her brain rest and heal. She was scheduled to play in a pair of soccer games this week with many starters out due to injuries – meaning she likely should’ve seen more playing more this week; she would’ve had a Pirateers dance at the homecoming game, she was on different planning teams for the homecoming dance and midterms are only a week away…so we’re not sure how this week will play out. But she can’t do anything about it, except rest, relax and let her body heal. We’ll figure it out later.
Abby was off on Tuesday so we ran Luke to school. I walked a little over a mile after work before leaving early for Luke’s football game at East Central to face Sunman-Dearborn. We met up with Bryan at his house so Ann could drive his car to the game while I followed Bryan, who was driving his RV to drop it off for service. We were a little late because someone had to shave their legs…so the video for the game is shot from like three different spots as I walked in just as they were kicking off – but I got every play! Due to disciplinary actions, we did not have our full starting lineup in the 1st half and got in a two-touchdown hole. In the 2nd half, we looked much better with our full compliment of players in the game. The boys played with a lot of heart and very nearly pulled off a come-from-behind victory. They came up just a little short in an exciting finish, 20-26. Luke’s stats: He again represented the team as a tri-captain at the coin flip. On offense he played halfback, fullback, wide receiver and flanker. He had 6 rushes for 16 yards, a sweet pancake block, went 0-2 on balls thrown to him (both uncatchable) and a fumble (that thankfully went out of bounds). Defensively he played middle linebacker and both outside linebacker positions. He recorded 4 tackles. On special teams he lined up as a returner and later an up-back on the kickoff return team with 1 return for 16 yards. He was also the kicker again with 4 kicks: 10 (on-side they returned for a TD), 40 (went out of bounds and the re-kick was a pooch for 21); 22 (another pooch to the up-back); and 10 (on-side that we recovered at the end of the game!). Ann & the boys left for home with Bryan while I stayed to tape the 8th grade game, which they won easily. I got home pretty quickly afterwards and uploaded the videos to HUDL for the players and coaching staff. While we were gone, Abby did sneak out to see Kirk on Senior Night then came home right away. Later, Ann & I watched the series finale of one of our favorite TV shows – Rizzoli & Isles. And Dee & Jamie celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary – congrats guys! :0)

Wednesday was the first day of fall and the 2nd day off for Abby. It was also Aunt Sharon’s birthday. We hope she had a good one. Abby did pretty good resting…until her birthday present arrived – her iPhone 7 came in the mail. Old Black Betty was leaking antifreeze that morning so we took Tonya to work, since Abby isn’t supposed to be leaving the house. I walked 3 miles after work. Luke had football practice then helped me change the leaking top radiator hose in the Pacifica before the Pizza Hut delivery guy came by with our dinner. Kirk joined us for dinner and spent a couple hours with Bu, who was not happy that she had to miss her dance class at Dixon Studio.
Thursday was another hot day, up in the 90’s (3rd in a row now). Bu was still recovering at home, missing soccer, dance class at Dixon and Pirateers. Luke went to football practice after school. I walked 3.5 miles after work as Ann had to stay late at her job. We picked up an Otter Box case for Abs before coming home. She’s such a girl – a pink phone with a plum case. Black Betty did well for us, but now it has a leaky tire (always something!). We watched American Horror Story and several other DVR’ed shows that we had missed.
Friday was Ann & I’s 21st anniversary. I was so mad that her present didn’t come in time – even though I paid extra for it to be here – BS! It was Dad Scheu’s 69th birthday (it was good to call & talk with him on the way in to work before he went golfing). It was also Keith’s 50th birthday (Mom & Sandy traveled to see them in E Aurora for the weekend). I can still remember attending his 40th bday party – sorry we missed this milestone! I ran Luke to school, who did not have football practice afterwards due to a dance. They hold dances after school now instead of at night for some reason. Abby was still off – she needs to be headache-free before she can return to school and needs to go a full week w/o headaches before she can return to sports. She felt pretty good today, resting her body. Luke went home with Tyler after school (they decided not to attend the dance) and did not help on the sidelines of the varsity football game as a ball boy that night. Instead, he enjoyed swimming in their new pool and ended up staying the night at his house. I walked another 3.5 miles after work on even hotter and humid day. It was cool to see the temporary infrastructure set up around the north side of town for tomorrow’s fourth annual Columbus Marathon. I would like to try and do their half-marathon one day. Ann & I took Abby to the homecoming game at halftime to see her Pirateers dance and the homecoming festivities (Kirk was on the court as a finalist for King). He unfortunately did not win. It was really loud and bright there and her headache soon returned. I’ve not seen the parking lot so full since the last time the boys won sectionals when Matt was a sophomore. Coach Moore & his team won a close game vs. Franklin Co. to become the winningest coach in school history! Congrats, Scott! Abs joined Ann & I for a fancy Anniversary dinner…at Chili’s – LOL! :0) …And Dad B would sure be proud to know that I’ve coaxed another 200,000 miles out of another one of our vehicles. He taught me the value in taking care of an automobile’s engine and how routine maintenance can prolong its life. Betty White turned 200K as I pulled in to the driveway that night after work. Abby even came out to hop in the truck as I pulled it forward in the driveway for the final little turn of the odometer. Here’s hoping she has another 200K in her! Luke asked if I would ever get rid of that truck and I told him that I would keep it as long as I could, as it was the first vehicle I ever bought and paid for with my own money. Here are random pictures from this week: my walking stats; big wreck on the bypass; sites from walks; harvest moon eclipse; more sites from walks; truck turned 200K; Mom O at Keith’s; Bu w/ Pirateers and Kirk at Homecoming; Luke working at Gma & Gigi’s; and Bu playing Star Wars Monopoly.

Luke came home early on Saturday morning and I ran him to football practice. While he was at practice, I took the Pacifica to Five Points to get the tire fixed and then did the weekly PM to the vehicles before picking him up. Abby took it easy all day and Matt stayed at school this weekend. When we got back home, Luke & I worked out in the yard – both at home and at Mom & Sandy’s house. We then ran several errands, came home and cleaned up, grabbed a late lunch and played a lengthy game of Star Wars Monopoly, Luke opted out at the last moment so it was just me and the girls with yours truly being the big winner. For dinner, Ann made us a big pot of chili – yum!
We enjoyed sleeping in on Sunday morning before slowly getting up to do our weekly household chores and watch football all day on our day off. Ann went out with Shawna to go shopping in Brown County on another hot day. They tell us it is supposed to cool down after a storm rolls through either tonight or tomorrow. Abby had Mary over for a little while – she brought her homemade apple pie. Luke did not have basketball practice this week due to not being able to find an open court. The Simpsons & Family Guy returned but we had to watch them on the DVR since the Cowboys played the Bears on Sunday Night Football. Dennis & I had lunch on the line. Dallas was leading as I typed up this week’s blog. The Colts finally won a game to run their record to 1-2. It was a nice, relaxing day and a great way to end the week. Here are various social media pictures: Abby solo, with Kirk and with friends; Scheu cousins; Bu’s cool Potter cake; Casey & Susan’s big news; Smith cousins; Keith & Ro-Ro; Abs & friends; Messers; Hellmichs; Guard ladies; Bu w/ Kirk at Senior Night; Tyson’s big news; Rush’s new park; Brent lighting ‘em up; miscellaneous cool stuff; FC football leading the conference and ranked in the top 20!; Abby’s only day at school during Homecoming week; Shriver Field all dolled up for Homecoming; a cool Calvin & Hobbes shirt and our very close friends Bryan & Angie, out for a ride.

Next we have our Waybac segment which continues to feature our second 6 photo albums of our young family. There are truly some great pictures in these books and this week’s batch is a good example of that…we lead off this time with the Bryan family Christmas in December 1998 at Vird & Belinda’s in Indy; then Matt’s 3rd birthday party in March 1999 in Greensburg; next Matt & I in the Gulf of Mexico in May 1999 in Treasure Island, FL; then Matt playing YMCA t-ball at the high school – this was when the Y was downtown and before the Field House was built in June 1999 in Greensburg; then we have Matt playing with Brayton and at school at the Y, swimming at the new pool in January 2000 in Greensburg; Matt with and w/o the girls around our first home in Greensburg in April 2000; Matt playing t-ball at the new YMCA field in June 2000 in Greensburg; Abby & Matt at the fair in July 2000 in Greensburg; some of my favorite pictures of the first two kids on Main St in October 2000 in Greensburg; more of the kids in the living room on Main St a couple months later in December 2000; and Abby & Gma with Chuck E Cheese for Matt’s bday party in March 2001 in Columbus.
