With, Without…and Who’ll Deny it’s what the Fighting’s All About?

What a crazy week. To begin with, the presidential election is finally over and the results showed exactly what we knew – we are a very divisive country. The week ended with riots and protests, leaving a rather uncertain feeling in the pit of my stomach. It is getting dark so early now due to time change that I feel like we don’t get enough done in a day and need to go to bed earlier…which I guess isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We’ve had a few issues with equipment, which kept things interesting – my laptop is having trouble waking up from sleep mode (not sure if it is getting ready to die or just some other weird issue). The dryer is on the fritz again as one day it just stopped turning on. We should’ve had a new washer/dryer set by now…but the one Ann picked out from Lowe’s turned out to be that Samsung set that keeps catching fire, which is kind of a drag. They were pulled from the market before she finalized the purchase. Somehow we got both going but I hope we find time to look for a replacement for both this week. The week started off unseasonably warm in the 80s but quickly reminded us that we were in Indiana during November as it got colder and colder as the week progressed, ending with low’s in the 30s and a couple of frosts. Matt came home for the weekend to work at the old folks home. Abby danced and danced and danced despite being sick. Luke focused on basketball; games start next week (actually we have three home games next week!). Ann seemed to get around pretty well despite getting sick from Abby. I continued to struggle with my diet but did well with exercising – getting in 15 miles this week. Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
Monday was a beautiful day as we made our way back to work and school. It went pretty fast for a Monday and I walked a 5K without a jacket afterwards. It would be the only day warm enough to say that. Luke had basketball after school. Abby had Pirateers practice and eventually worked out at the Y, going running with Mary and meeting up with Randall. Afterward she had Randall over for the evening. We finally got a chance to sit down and watch the Great Pumpkin, keeping alive the tradition we started when Matt was born. Abs made the paper that night for earning Academic All-State honors in soccer – way to go, Bu! As promised, we have a few pictures from last weekend’s baby shower with the Scheu ladies.

Tuesday was cooler and rainy. Ann & I voted before work, where I learned my license had expired a week or so ago on my birthday. I walked through some drizzle during my 2.5 mile walk after work. Luke had basketball practice after school. Abby had Student Council before school then worked at BWR till late. It was already dark by the time Luke & I got to the BMV after we got home. We got there just before they closed. We ran a couple errands and took Gigi her traditional drink at the courthouse, where she was covering the election returns for WTRE. Republicans won Indiana big-time – from Governor to Congress to House Reps and most points in between, including the Trump / Pence ticket. It was a highly contested election but Trump beat Clinton to become the 45th president of the USA. Clinton won the popular vote but Trump won the Electoral College votes, which is all that counts. Several states legalized recreational use of pot, which makes me wonder when the federal government will finally decriminalize it.
It was a cool and blustery Wednesday. Ann & I went in to work early and I walked 2.5 miles after work. Luke again had basketball after school. Abby went out to dinner with Kuyhlia (dance coach & current Colts cheerleader). Later, Ann met Bu for jazz class at Dixon and they picked out costumes. Afterwards, Bu again worked out at the YMCA with Mary.
There was frost on the ground as we started our Thursday. We actually had to let the cars warm up for a minute before we could get going that morning. It was another fast day and I walked another 2.5 miles afterwards on a decent day. It was chilly but sunny that afternoon. Abby went out with her buddies to ride 4-wheelers after school, despite my better judgment. Luke went to basketball practice after school and Ann & I picked him up again that day because Mom & Sandy had dinner plans the last two nights. Ann made tacos for dinner that we would munch on all weekend. She then met up with Bu at Dixon for tap class where they picked out costumes for their competition routine. Here is this week’s batch of random pictures.

It was a cold Veteran’s Day on Friday. I drove the truck for what is likely the last time this year. The heater no longer works so Luke & I had a blanket to keep warm. I walked 4 miles after work and stopped by to see Dennis & Lenny and meet Momma. After basketball practice, Luke went to spend the night with Luke and the Hellmichs. Abby worked at Wings & Rings after work then had Randall over till late. Matt was off school due to the holiday and decided to come home early for the weekend. We felt bad because he came home to see us and no one was home that night. Ann & I met up with the Messers to go out and celebrate Angie’s birthday. We had planned to go to Lachey’s in Cincy for dinner but the bar is only a couple blocks from the courthouse where there was a racially-charged trial wrapping up and there was a possibility of some trouble and possibly a riot! So we ended up going to Jag’s – a rather upscale restaurant where we had an amazing dinner, a few drinks and enjoyed some live music from a surprisingly good band named Sly. Ann & I enjoyed a delicious 3-course, steak & shrimp meal and laughed so hard that our guts hurt for hours. We also had a fun during the ride there and back in a 15-passenger van with a hired driver and many of our friends – Bryan & Angie, Pat & Shawna, Rick & Lynn, Shawn & Ally, Chad, Nathan & Anita and Rob & Mary (thx to Bob for driving). What a great night. …And of course a HUGE thank you to our host, Bryan, for an unforgettable night!! Thanks buddy!

Abby was up early and out the door before Ann & I even got up on Saturday morning. She went to Pirateers practice then stayed at the high school to help set up things for the big Student Council-sponsored, fund-raising event she was helping to facilitate. Luke again had basketball practice then came home to help me mow & winterize around the house. We drained the truck’s radiator of water and put in antifreeze for the winter. I plan to park it and drive the van through the cold months again since the heater no longer works in the truck. After mowing we ran the yard equipment out of fuel and put in some stabilizer for the winter. We also closed up the crawl spaces with insulation and put away the hoses. This is the time of year I’m glad we no longer have the pool. Luke & I grabbed a late lunch at Subway and ran around town until after dark, looking for airsoft guns but finding only real guns. Matt worked at Aspen Place until after dark. Ann helped Abby at their inaugural Riley Dance Marathon that night. The theme was Dance for Miracles with the hash tag on social media as #FTC (for the children). Their goal was to raise $6K for the kids and they ended up surpassing that goal with over $7500! Meanwhile the boys and I watched Sausage Party & Star Trek Beyond before the girls got home and Randall came over. We watched the newest Purge movie until late.

We enjoyed sleeping in on Sunday morning. It was another frosty morning with frozen dew on the freshly-mowed lawn. Abby got up and went to work at BWR about mid-morning. Ann got up and made a delicious cheesy egg and sausage casserole. Matt went to work at the old folks’ home around noon. We did our weekly household chores while watching football and the replay of last night’s UFC 205 event, headlined by the Connor McGregor lightweight bout where he won another belt, making him the first to hold two belts simultaneously in two different weight classes. Wow. The Colts didn’t (they had a bye week). The Saints found a new way to lose against the Broncos as Brees led NO down the field for a game-tying TD but the extra point was blocked and run back for a game-winning 2-point conversion. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. The Cowboys played in the late afternoon game vs. a very game Steelers team. There were seven lead changes. It ranks right up there with one of the greatest games I’ve ever seen. Luke & I were screaming by the end of the game. I’m sure the neighbors loved it. The Cowboys are actually 8-1! I can’t believe how well the two rookies on offense are playing – Dak Prescott and Zeke Elliot. They played at a very high level today. Surely Romo will be his backup at this point… We were sad to hear that two musical artists (mostly popular before our time) passed away this weekend – Leonard Cohen (best know for his composition “Halleluiah” – a song that is still very popular and has been covered by dozens of artists) and the great singer/song writer and R&R Hall-of-Famer, Leon Russell (best known for his work with Joe Cocker). Abby had Randall over for several hours and he stayed for dinner as well. Ann made Matt (and the rest of us) one of his favorite dinners – “noonles” and “tadies,” along with a loaf of homemade bread – the house smelled amazing all day today… That night we had a super moon, which wasn’t really as cool as I had hoped. It looked like any other full moon from my vantage point. We watched more football that night along with the Walking Dead. Matt stayed the night again with plans to get up tomorrow morning and go have breakfast with Gma before driving back to school. We have lots of social media pictures to share this week.

Next up is our Waybac segment which still features photos from our 2nd six photo albums of our young family – primarily focusing in our years in the Main St house and a few more pix of Mom. We lead off this week in our side yard as Matt plays in the snow with Ann & I and later Mom & Sandy came over to play euchre in January 1999; next is Matt’s 3rd birthday party in March 1999; then we head out to the high school (where the Fieldhouse now sets) for YMCA t-ball in June 1999; next we have one of my personal favorite photos of when Nat & Stacy brought over their kids and later Matt watched the fair parade from the WTRE yard – all in July 1999; and then we have Matt’s 4th birthday (not sure why we let him sit on the dining room table) in March 2000 (what a sweet little sister); next we head up to Rossville at Mom & Dad’s 2nd house for what I assume is Easter; then back to G’burg – out at Mom & Sandy’s Ryle Addition house for 4th of July fireworks in 2000; then out to Dee & Chad’s house, outside Westport for Grace’s homecoming and then more of the fair parade where Memaw drove Gigi’s car; next we head out to Brown Co, just outside Nashville for a Chrsitmas party at the Drew’s home in December 2000; next we head back to Main St as we set up our Christmas decorations, including our pretty new tree; and after that we fast-forward to March 2001 for Matt’s 5th birthday on Main St.
