Is this our Last Dance…Before we turn around and Say Goodbye?

Here we thought we’d have an enjoyable week of fall weather, but the temperatures and humidity were much higher than expected and so we were forced to keep the house closed-up and the A/C on. We tried to open-up the house at one point; but when Ann tried to Swiffer the floor and it kept sticking to the ground, we knew we needed to close the house back up. We did notice that it keeps getting darker sooner at night and staying darker later into the morning. In fact, I think we now leave our headlights on the entire commute in to work. The leaves are turning deeply-hued colors thanks to all the rain this year and we mowed up quite a bit of dead ones on the ground this weekend. We had another week of “the last time we ever…” as Abby had her final Pirateers dance on the high school football field on Senior Night. Luke enjoyed a rare week off from sports. Matt made a guest appearance at home. Ann struggled with her ankles, knees and headaches. I met my weekly goal of walking 15 miles. The kids had Fall Break this week, so they stayed focused on cleaning their rooms– which is no small feat. If you’ve been in either of their bedrooms, you know what I mean! And we want to wish Ms. Phyllis good luck with her big, upcoming medical procedure – we love you and will be thinking of you!! Hello again and welcome back to the Scheu Family Blog.
Monday was the first day of Fall Break for the kids. They only get one week this year, thankfully. Personally, I never really saw the need for a fall break since they just got back in to a routine after their summer break. Why not just give them an extra week of summer instead?? Ann & I took the day off to take Abs to Franklin for her 2nd college visit at FC. It was good to be back on campus at our old alma mater. It was cooler but still humid that day – typical for Franklin during our tenure on campus! Boy, campus looks different every time Ann & I go back there! This time, the Phi Delt house is offline and I think the “Teeks” are living in there temporarily. The Barnes (science) building is being added on to, just in front of the Sig house. And of course, they’ve added so many new buildings over the last 25 years that it looks a lot nicer today. Unfortunately, there is no sign of the frisbee golf course that Drake & I designed any longer. We walked about two miles during our campus tour, which I counted towards my weekly goal. I think Abby liked it and will at least consider going there, if the $$ is right. Afterward we went downtown and ate lunch at the Willard. I couldn’t help but get a pizza for old times’ sake. We brought the leftovers back to Luke, who stayed home and held down the fort. He said it was the greatest pizza he’s ever tasted. I, too, concur. Luke ended up going to the YMCA to practice basketball with his buddies. When we got home, he went to the woods to work on his fort until it got dark outside. Meanwhile, the rest of us took naps for a couple hours before Abby got up and went to teach dance at Dixon and hang around to have class with Kuyhlia that night.

While the kids still had the day off on Tuesday, Ann & I returned to work after three-day weekend…and man did it feel like a Monday! The kids stayed in to clean their rooms. It was a perfect day as it rained most of the day but dried up long enough for me to walk about three miles after work. Luke went out for a few hours with his buddies to work on his fort in the woods when we got home. Later, the kids went out to eat while Ann went out to dinner with Heather to discuss prom / after prom, leaving me with a quiet evening to work on Luke’s year-end stats. So, here are his final statistics (unofficially, of course) for his 2017 football season: He only had nine games, but one was a forfeit so these are for only 8 games; (7-2 record). He played 6 positions (fullback, outside linebacker, middle linebacker, kickoff team, kickoff return team and kicker). On offense: he rushed 45 times for 303 yards (6.7-yard average); was 1-1 in passing for 35 yards (35-yard average); 1-1 receiving for 57 yards (57-yard average); 4 pancakes; 1 fumble; scored 64 points (4 TD runs, 1 TD throw, 1 TD catch, 1 TD KOR and 2 PAT runs). On defense: he had 67 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 tackles for loss; 3 hurries, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery. On special teams: 2 KO returns for 71 yards (35.5 average) and 29 kicks for 961 yards (5 OS kicks – 33-yard average).
Wednesday started warm & humid but ended cool & dry. Ann was again in training all day. It was a fast day of work for me then I worked 3.5 miles. Abby & Luke cleaned their rooms again then went to Columbus to do some shopping. Ann went out to dinner with Shawna & their scrapbooking friends. Later, Ann & Abby went to dance classes at DDS.

Thursday was a cool, overcast day that saw the humidity return with a vengeance. Abby was up early for Pirateers practice before the dawn. Luke enjoyed time in the woods with his buddies. Ann was in meetings all day. I had a fast day that culminated with 3 more miles of walking – in my best time of the year! I averaged about 16-minute miles. Abby & Ann went to Enochsburg to prep for the wedding they’re working this weekend. Luke & I waited 40 minutes in drive through for Taco Bell for dinner that night then watched scary movies until bedtime. Although it was cool, the humidity remained unbearable so we slept in the A/C again that night.
On Friday, the sun finally returned after being gone most of the week. It warmed up nicely. Ann took the day off to go scrapbooking in Burney with Shawna & friends. I had a long day of moving offices then walked 3+ miles afterward. Abby had her final Pirateers performance on the football field at Senior Night. She’ll still dance during basketball season, but this is different. The girls did their pre-game routine then presented the colors with Abby holding Old Glory. At halftime, they danced to the band’s rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint it Black.” With it being Senior Night, the dance was choreographed by Abby & Kama (the only 2 seniors on the team) and featured them as well. Matt came home to watch Bu’s big evening and Memaw & Gigi also came out to support her. Big thanks to Gigi for all the great pictures! Afterward, we went to dinner at ElRep with just the five of us. It was kind of nice; we don’t have many of those meals any longer…I wish I had a picture of it since it is becoming such a scarce event these days. I was out early, exhausted from the day (and the margarita helped, too) while the kids stayed up late, watching movies on the big screen until the wee hours of the morning.

Ann & the kids slept in on Saturday while I got up to get started on my errands. I did the annual FAFSA (which is always fun, if you’ve ever had a college student then you know what I’m talking about), put new tags on the plates and replaced the registration on all the cars (I didn’t realize they had expired – I had the new stuff just setting on the desk for a week…oops) and checked fluids in the vehicles. Molly came out front with me and then we went to Gma & Gigi’s house to help them put away stuff in the backyard before heading out to Rural King (which is dog-friendly). Molly got to meet her first rooster. She was very well behaved and she received several compliments. We came home so Luke & I could mow and trim the yard and go to Taco Bell for a quick lunch. We did a little HW hunting and Luke drove the truck from the park back to the house. He got changed real quick and went with his siblings and Ann to help with a fundraiser to benefit the Pirateers by helping to cater at a wedding in Enochsburg. Afterward they stopped for dinner at BWR then came home and crashed. Meanwhile, I went out to Bryan’s house where we had steaks on the grill (with some killer new hot sauce called, “One Drop’ll Do Ya!” We enjoyed some cold brews on tap at the Sunken Boat Bar, smoked a stogie and watched football on the big screen. We eventually moved outdoors on a picture-perfect night – possibly the last one of the year?
We enjoyed sleeping in on a wet, gloomy Sunday. Ann made pulled pork sandwiches and mac & cheese for an early lunch. Ann took Matt shopping before he headed back up to school. He worked at his new job, up in Indy. Abby went in to work at Wings & Rings. The rest of us did our weekly household chores. I watched football (Bears & Saints both won wild ones, the Cowboys had a bye and the Colts play tomorrow) on Red Zone and the NASCAR races (Jr was so close to winning at Talladega, but finished 6th) while Ms. Ann napped (I may have dozed a few times as well). Later we had leftovers and Ann & I watched some of our DVR’ed shows from earlier in the week while Abby & Luke went to Edinburg to go shopping at the outlet mall. We talked to Memaw and were saddened to hear that our old neighbor on Main St., Harriet Fisher, passed away. We wound down our evening with the Season 3 finale of Fear the Walking Dead and Talking Dead. Although we’ll miss watching it on Sunday nights, next week is the season 8 premier of The Walking Dead and it’s hard to believe it will be the 100th episode…

Next up is our Waybac segment which continues to feature our next three photo albums of our young family as well as a few nuggets of gold from Memaw & Gigi. We lead off this week with a yearbook page from 1954 with Mom O; then Ann in Sandy’s Main St home with Santa Dean and the Biddinger grandkids, circa 1991; the kids playing around the Ryle home – first in our backyard in the first pool (with the apple tree) and then in the family room at my old school desk (that my Grandpaw Brown had originally salvaged from St Boniface’s old school in Lafayette and then I refinished it a couple times) in August 2001; then up to LaPorte to visit my high school buddies at Mom & Dad Stoewer’s house out on Johnson Rd in August 2001; next we have the kids playing around the house between Christmas & New Years in December 2001; more pictures from Matt’s birthday party at the Parkside Lanes in March 2002; Megan in March 2002; Matt’s birthday party at home in March 2002; Matt as a catcher with the Marlins in May 2002; Matt & Bu with Ms. Phyllis at her retirement party in June 2002; Gigi & Bu on the back porch of our Ryle home in July 2002; next we head up to Tippecanoe County for a Morgan family reunion in August 2002 (great picture of Aunt Norma & Uncle Ralph!); Ann’s “Grandma” Townsend’s funeral card in January 2003; Gracie, circa 2003/2004; and another Abby dance picture from June 2004…with her favorite pose of the year!
