Whoo, New Year…That’s the Time I Wanna See…

We had a quiet New Year’s this time around, but enjoyed the quality family time with Dad & Lynn. In fact, we’ve enjoyed a ton of family time this week. It is especially sweet as Ann & I know that these moments won’t be around forever and we deeply treasure them. It was a cold week – probably will be the coldest of the entire rest of the year with average temps hovering right around zero. Although I didn’t go to Columbus, I did work several hours from home. Ann worked a few days but only one was a full day. Matt worked about half the week and spent some time with his buddies when he wasn’t ill. Abby and Luke had to go back to school at the end of the week. Bu split her time between dance, work and friends. Luke split his time between basketball, video games and friends. It was good to slow down again this week. I enjoyed taking a longer break from work this year. I really needed it, as I started to show signs of burnout. And although I will be very busy for many weeks to come, it was good to step back a little and recharge my battery. Hello again and welcome to the latest installment of the Scheu Family Blog.

We woke up to a cold house on New Year’s Day as temps dropped all the way down to -9° with an even colder wind chill. We enjoyed sleeping in on that chilly Monday morning and laughed as Grandpa snuggled up in a blanket when he came out for his morning coffee. Matt had the day off work and he played Xbox and napped most of the day. Abby, too, had the day off work. She cleaned her room then went to Trevin’s house. Luke played PS4 most of the day then later had basketball practice. Ann made us homemade meals all day – biscuits & gravy for breakfast, Rebel Dogs and coleslaw for lunch (for good luck) and chicken corn chowder for dinner. It was amazing as always. She has become such a great cook. I worked on the blog all morning to troubleshoot why it has kept pulling the incorrect lead picture for the last month or so…and I *think* I finally got it figured out ! We watched all five college football bowl games throughout the day and took it easy. It was another frigid day where the high was -5° but the wind chill made it feel more like -12! It was a full “wolf” moon that night and will supposedly be the brightest of the year. We felt bad for Dad & Lynn because they were so cold… Dad & I played Ann & Lynn in some euchre and when Dad retired for the evening, Matt & I played them. It reminded me of the days long ago when Mom & Dad would play countless games of euchre with Grandmaw & Grandpaw Brown. I thoroughly enjoyed playing and talking with them and wished we could do it more often. We begin with random pictures of our recent adventures.

Ann, Matt & I had the day off on Tuesday. Abby had Pirateers practice then worked 2nd shift at Wings & Rings. That evening, Luke had a basketball game at Batesville’s St. Louis school. We hadn’t been there in a few years. It was Ann’s turn to make the boys sandwiches for dinner. Thanks to Matt for helping carry everything. Dad & Lynn came with us to watch the Dukester and the 8th grade A-team play. Luke started at center. The boys came out all guns blazing and were up big by the break, thanks to a stifling defense that held them to 8 points in the 1st half. Of course, that meant the starters didn’t get to play much in the 2nd half and they blew out the Cardinals 57-18. Luke’s stats: 2 points on 1-1 shooting with 4 TOs. He also had 0 rebounds and a tip-out, 5 blocks, 2 steals, forced a turnover and committed only one foul. We stopped by LaRosa’s for dinner afterward. Earlier, I had to work from home as we had a sprinkler head break due to the pipes freezing yesterday – I guess it created quite a mess. Thankfully, I have outstanding employees who got it cleaned up quickly.

I enjoyed another day off from work on Wednesday as Ann returned and both Matt and Abby worked double shifts. I did run a few errands and Luke & took Dad and Lynn to Stories for lunch. Ann made cheeseburgers, tater tots, corn dip and cheesy baked green beans for dinner – yum! We had another two sprinkler heads start leaking but my guys got them changed before they discharged, thankfully. We had a few snow flurries that didn’t amount to much. We played some more euchre that evening and then we watched Purdue trounce Lynn’s alma mater, Rutgers. When Matt got home that night he was pretty sick, so he started a Z-pack to knock it out.

Luke & Bu returned to school on Thursday. Matt went to work even though he wasn’t feeling well. Abs had Pirateers practice then went out to dinner with Molie. Luke stayed after school to attend basketball practice and then watched the B-team basketball game, riding home with Tyler. Ann worked a half day then we took Dad & Lynn up to Greenwood for the afternoon. We introduced them to Shallo’s for lunch then stopped in to Jared’s to exchange jewelry and get Ann’s birthday present. We came home and watched the new Kingsman movie and napped then played some more euchre – the boys swept the girls, again that evening, but who’s keeping track? 😊 It was another cold day – only 2° most of it…not sure if we ever saw double digits today or not…brrr. We had another sprinkler head discharge late that night and again, I must give a big shout-out to the employees that responded and got it all taken care of that night. We have lots of social media pictures to share again this week.

The kids had a 2-hour delay for school due to the cold on Friday morning. Our sprinkler vendor came in to service the system on another day right around zero degrees outside. Matt worked again despite being sick – a work ethic his mother and I are proud of. Ann again worked a half day to try and stay ahead of the curve. Me, I enjoyed my final day off and dreaded the mess I will walk into on Monday after being off for two weeks. Annie had a doctor appointment that went well. It was Dad & Lynn’s last full day. We went through pictures and got things packed up and ready for the morning. We had an odd incident late that morning when some random guy came in our backyard. I saw him walk around through our front yard and confronted him as he was about to come on our back porch. He asked if Matt was home and when I said no, he got nervous, apologized and started to walk away when Lola bit him and she & Molly barked him out of the yard. It was all very strange. That evening, Ann & I took the elders and the boys to see Abby & the Pirateers dance at the girls’ basketball game vs. Franklin County. The girls team is ranked but it was a low scoring affair that was very physical. Abby helped present the colors, but they did not perform a pre-game routine. They danced to Sweet Caroline in a routine that Abs choreographed, which of course was fabulous! Afterward we all went out for dinner to ElRep where we had a couple pitchers of margaritas and a huge meal. It was nice to have everyone together and made some good memories that night. We came home to play some more euchre and looked at Abby’s senior pictures on the big screen so Dad & Lynn could pick out the ones they wanted us to print-off for them. We watched a little TV then called it a night so we could get up early tomorrow.

Sadly, we got up early and saw Dad & Lynn off to FLA on a frigid Saturday morning. Again, it never got out of single digits. I didn’t feel well and I actually broke out the sweatpants and a sweatshirt for the first time in a few years. Mercifully, we decided not to put away the Christmas tree because frankly we were worn out from the week! The only time we left the house was to run Luke to basketball practice. Later, he had “Mitch” over to spend the night. Matt looked a little better before he went in to work at Aspen Place. Abby slept most of the day then went in to work 2nd shift at BWR. We watched the Wild Card round of NFL playoffs, the #13 Boilermakers game (another win – this time over Nebraska) and a few DVR’ed shows as we snuggled up under blankets with the dogs, waiting for the big kids to come home from spending the evening with their friends while the little ones played video games in the family room until God knows when.

I didn’t sleep well overnight, so I got up early on Sunday morning and watched more of the Game of Thrones marathon. I’ve made it through season 5 and I’m hooked…though I must say it has given me some weird dreams. The others slowly got up and we got our weekly household chores going. Abby went in to work and Matt went over to have brunch with Memaw before going to work himself. Luke & Luke slept in until Ann made them breakfast. They enjoyed playing PS4 until Mitch left. Mom & Sandy came over and picked out senior pictures with Pixie, late that afternoon. Throughout the rest of the afternoon and late into the evening, we took naps, watched a few more episodes of Game of Thrones and watched the two playoff football games; enjoying the last bit of peace before the stark reality of work comes screaming back in the morning…

Next up is our Waybac section which continues to feature our next three photo albums of our young family around the turn of the century. We lead off with the first picture of Ann & I at Stacy & Danny’s wedding in 1992; then we see Matthew on Main St during his 3rd birthday party in March 1999; our visit to the Indy Zoo in June 2001; Abby’s 2nd birthday party in September 2001; Matt at basketball practice at the YMCA in December 2001; Matt’s private birthday party with just the four of us in March 2002; next we head up to Lafayette to visit Mom & Dad Scheu and Mom & Dad Bryan – first out to the Rossville home on the hill and then to the Parkside Deli – in May 2002; little Megan at her baptism in LaPorte in May 2002; and finally Nathan & Steph’s wedding in September 2002.
